Yeah I know another Shipyard beer but I saw that its out. I like Black IPA's so yeah its not high on my priority list to try but I will eventually. The label is pretty sweet though despite doing a pirate theme when Heavy Seas already has a Black IPA.

I tried their mint stout at a tasting on Friday hoping for exactly this (that it would surprise me). It wasn't good, but I didn't pick up the usual Shipyardy flavors - it was bad in a different way. Blazing new trails up in Portland.

At least they are consistent, always mediocre to poor.

Shipyard had one of the worst "tours"/tasting rooms I've ever been to. It seemed to be more about being a stupid touristy gift shop than anything beer related.

Only the mediocre are always at their best.

What is their consensus "best beer?" I had their barrel aged pumpkin not too long ago, which was actually good. Of course, *I* didn't pay for the $15 bottle and was just given a pour from my friend's bottle.

Exactly what I was thinking. Why come out with one now ?

15 bucks for a barrel aged beer is still pretty cheap isnt it ? I know I saw their barrel aged Monkey First IPA for like 18 bucks. Most of their bombers are 10 bucks. Not cheap but not too expensive.

Same here. It was definitely the best Shipyard beer I've had, but it still wasn't great and definitely wasn't worth the price. The only beer of theirs I can stomach is Monkey Fist, but only because the hops mask the awful "Shipyard flavor"

FWIW, I like their Prelude and Old Thumper (yes, there's diacetyl, but it's intentional for these beers). I haven't been too impressed by anything else I've had of theirs.

I've seen it in stores but just can't bring myself to buy it. It sounds interesting, but I just know they would screw it up.

Yup. I went there when my buddy used to work there and had a good laugh going thru the gift shop. The worst part of his job was that he got free beer, so we had to drink Shipyard all weekend

I ran into one of their employees too - similar sort of situation (they weren't overly impressed at what the brewery was putting out there.)

They had it at a store tasting I went to on Friday. People weren't kind. It was definitely a mint bomb (which is easy to do brewing with mint leaves) - kind of like drinking mouthwash and coffee while chewing on a bit of black licorice.

When the question is Shipyard, the answer is always "No"

That sounds terrible but for some reason makes me want to try it. It's like when the waitress tells me my plate is really hot. I touch it anyways to see what "really hot" means to her.

I drink Chamberlain from time to time when I am at a bar with limited taps. That guy was so bad ass his name alone can make a shipyard beer good.

I gave up on them after Monkeyfist. Stupid me, I should have learned sooner.
