High life is my shit when I'm low on cash, and honestly its not that bad

I think people on this site tend to get a little too heated when talking about BMC drinkers, but oh well

I can distinguish between bottles of water. I imagine there is even more to distinguish between bottles of adjunct lagers.

Then throw the whole branding thing into the equation...

Any one that tells you they're all the same is full of shit. I've done a few blind cheap beer tastings over the years and the differences can be surprising. The BMC lights are always the hardest to tell apart because they are so bland, but even those have their differences (Bud tends to do well because it's the least offensive). No two recipes are the same and side by side you can certainly notice even if you can't correctly identify it.

Basically, if a generic BMC drinker tells you how much they love one and hate another, it's most likely brand loyalty. But when it comes to BA and craft beer drinkers, I'm willing to bet many have their reasons for loving/hating an adjunct. Myself, I can't think of any adjunct I truly hate. I'd rather drink an ice cold and bland adjunct than some of the shitty 'craft' I've had.

if you can't discern the difference between a budweiser, a bud light, a coors, a coors light, or a miller light, you need to step up your palate game

I couldn't pick them specifically I'm sure, but I'd have preferences. IMO AB stuff is way to carbonated, Miller is sweet, and Coors sucks. PBR, Schlitz is malty. Actually I like Miller Lite, it's far from poison, simple, clean, has to be really cold, like most of these brews..

I think that they have distinct enough tastes to warrant preferences. Here are my personal tastes.
Regular AAL: Budweiser > Miller > Coors
Light AAL: Coors Light > MGD > Bud Light
Extra Cheap AAL: PBR > Natty Light > Keystone
I think a lot of these preferences have to do with what I grew up partying with in high school and college. Granted, I have not had most of these in more than a few years.

In my experience at that price point, a Schlitz is better than a Pabst or a Narragansett* and a Pabst or a Narragansett is better than a High Life.

*This is in reference to regular old Narragansett and not to one of their specialty brews, which tend to be better. Their Bohemian Pils this summer was solid.

Never had Schlitz, and Narragansett doesn't distro to CA. High Life always got points in my book for being in 32oz bottles. I like 32oz bottles (see avatar).

It's a little more subtle, but there's a difference. I'll take PBR over any BMC when I'm low on dough. However, there's definitely a sort of stubborn bias. I've encountered many people who could have their favorite adjunct lager served to them under a different name and still hate it. Some people DESPISE change. I really don't get it.

Guessing a blind tasting of any beer is quite tough, regardless. I bet you couldn't pick your favorite IPA out of a line up.

I don't know what it is about Natty Ice that makes it so awful but my tongue tells me I should choose that Busch any day of the week.

I worked in a bar/restaurant many, many years ago when I was in college and the bartenders switched the beers all the time. In fact, they switched Bud for Coors just to see if the customers knew the difference, and they never knew. It is definitely all labeling.

I prefer the AAL's that are less harsh and grainy. Luckily here we have Narragansett here which is one of the best AAL's available. PBR is ok too. Budweiser and Corona are very harsh and grainy and not drinkable IMO.

as far as adjuncts go my preference is what maximizes taste per $/oz. usually PBR at a show or dos equis for cerveza.

It may well be that you are a "super taster" but, sadly, most of us don't fall into that category. I've certainly heard of studies that replicate the what another poster described as happening in a bar - most people are unable to distinguish the difference between the various AALs. That does not mean that those with more sensitive taste buds cannot tell the difference between various AALs. I like to read the reviews posted here where posters tell about the various flavors they can detect in a beer. I can't do that but I can tell what I like and what I don't like. So people like me depend on people like you to give us the hints on what to look for when trying something new. With those hints we might be able to pick out some, but not all, of those flavors. That being said, I don't think that I can really tell the difference between AALs. At one time or another, I have liked one more that another, Bud, MGD, Schlitz, Coors Banquet, Schaeffer; but I doubt I could now tell one from another in a blind test. At my age, I am looking for more flavor rather than a quick high.

There are similarities in taste which we use to group beers into styles but that doesn't mean you can't discern tastes among different beers of the same style. Coke and Pepsi are both colas, but many people discern enough difference between them to establish a preference. Of course, a craft cola would blow them both out of the water:wink:
