I was ashamed at myself for buying a seemingly 8oz pour of Peeper at Five Horses in Davis for $9. The price wasn't listed and I thought it would be cheaper than their bottle prices.:slight_frown:

Geebus. I was just up in Portland and Peeper flows like water everywhere up there for about $6/pint. I realize it's a very long and treacherous 2 hour journey into Boston, and distributors must be compensated for the human casualties along the way, but methinks $12/pint markup is a bit much.

    Damn that's crazy. Hobo is $9 but I think it's a 10 or 12oz pour.

On another note, I'm getting really pissed at bars that don't list their prices somewhere.

That sounds like highway robbery to me. I would have complained to the owner about not listing prices. Unprofessional IMO.

Meh, just a place I won't be going back to. It just happened to be close and I'd never been.

We should all feel good that they are at least donating 1% of their profits to environmental organizations. A noble endeavor.

I thought craft brewers didn't make money. Are they donating blood, sweat, and beard shavings?

They actually donate 1% of their SALES, not just profits. @jctribe25: So they're giving money even if they're not making any.

Even better. I'll donate my beard shavings. Craft beer and beards are like 2 peas in a pod.

That explains my confusion - no clue why I assumed it was...

Also explains why I don't often post tasting notes on BA.

Busted again for publicly sowing seeds of disinformation and chaos - my specialty. LOL!

As gas prices hit roughly $4 a gallon around here...I got to thinking how that's really not all that bad a price, when you consider $1 an ounce beer working out to $128 a gallon. Makes you wonder how much that beer really cost to make relative to the cost you're being charged. Someone's making a ton of money...I don't care what anyone says. That's over $600 for a single sixtel.

I can't recall for sure, but I believe Peeper was served in a shaker pint glass for $7. It was reasonable enough that either my girlfriend and I got at least one pint on several visits earlier this month.

Agreed--I'd really like to see them go the Jack's Abby route and do 4-packs of the 500 mL bottles for ~ $10, as they grow. I'd buy a lot more Zoe, Peeper and hopefully Mo if I could pick up a 4-pack for a reasonable price.

Same here. I saw Zoe for like 8 bucks plus deposit at Blanchards Allston last night. In addition to not knowing how old it was, I'd rather be drinking something like Lagunitas Imperial Red that comes in at less 5 bucks for 22oz.

Just picked up a Mo for $6, standard pricing for Western MA. Reasonable price IMO.

From the intelligence I have collectively gathered, it's pretty clearly the bars. Not to say that I believe bar owners are walking around lighting their cigars with $100 bills, but if not, then they're clearly exploiting craft fanatics to compensate for other areas of the business.

Part of the problem is this outdated concept of marking up beer by a fixed percentage regardless of the price. They've always done it this way because the variance among drafts has historically been within $1 on most beers. Now though with these new nanobreweries and wholesale costs all over the place? A fixed percentage markup makes for insane draft prices. Beyond that, many are capitalizing on new/hyped stuff and adding a premium onto it. There is simply no excuse for $18 equivalent pints of draft Peeper.

In a way it's the fault of consumers for paying it, but at the same time it should be in bars best long-run interest to be careful not to keep pushing people to drink their beer at home.

Completely agree. However, I've started to drink beer at home only hitting up bars if something interesting comes on.

Just an FYI, Maine Beer Co. bottles dates all of their beers. Turn the bottle around and you'll know exactly how old it is.

Yeah - I like getting out just for the sake of getting out every now and again, but when I can share better beer at a much cheaper price with my friends at home, it's tough to justify going out. A group of 5-6 can easily drop $300+ over food and drinks for a couple of hours at a beer bar these days.
