You should try Overrated, it's much more what you were expecting.

But...but...I have opinions that cannot be expressed in a review.

This. If you don't like any malt flavor in your IPAs, Furious is not for you. Try Overrated - it's their west coast style (lighter malts & aggressive west coast hops).

I would compare Furious to a 60-Minute IPA, but with more hops. I enjoyed the heck out of it the first time side by side to Overrated. Both were good, but I preferred Furious. Everyone has different preferences. Actually, Revolution Anti-Hero has some malt flavor as well. Curious to see how that compares to Furious side by side.

Yes you're missing something...the taste buds required to enjoy Furious.

Overrated is even less intense than Furious with the hops, for a West Coast IPA it is just a terrible example IMO. I did them side by side the first time along with Hell lager and Cynic-ale and I wouldn't be upset if I never had them again in my life. Makes me wonder why Surly doesn't stick to stouts as Darkness is fantastic. To each their own.

Both furious and over rated underwhelmed me. Abrasive is tops though.

I've already expressed my opinion in the Surly in Chicago thread but my experience very much echoes the OP. I've had it several times since that first impression and my opinin hasn't changed. I do applaud it for trying something a little different though. I find the scottish malts they use definitely impart a little Scotch character to it. Having said that, there are about 5 or 6 readily available malt-forward American IPAs and APAs I'd rather have for less $.

I'll take Anti-Hero over Furious 9 times out of 10.

If you notice, the long time MN'ers posting here generally agree; the batch to batch consistencey isnt the greatest at the moment. I have had literally hundreds of cans and taps over the last few years and have shared @opwog's experience - some cans are in my top 5 ipa list, some are nothing special, or even not very good. Same with coffee bender; sometimes its a coffee BOMB, sometimes its a bland brown ale, but the great keep me coming back. Im not saying this is the best beer ever, but its certainly not bad in any way.

To the (mostly non-MN) people flaming this beer, have you had it more than once? and do you like balanced IPA's?

So try it again. You probably just happened to get a less than stellar batch, but the 5/5 furious is out there...

(and abrasive is the best MN beer, so you'll love that hop bomb)

(personally I felt the same about psuedoSue and ZD...nothing special IMO...but everyone else loves them...so some of it is just your taste buds too)

I'm with you on Furious. It's still a very solid and well made beer, but it's not really anything special.

If Surly stuck to stouts that would mean no Abrasive! No one wants that.....

Some of these posts read like they were written on the Bizarro world. "Me no think Furious special. It just average, right? Me only want hop bombs and bourbon barrel stouts. What am else there to drink but?"

And this is why beer geeks come off as insulated. There's more than one palate in the wide world. Because you don't like Cynic and Hell doesn't mean that thousands, if not millions, do, and breweries like Surly could not survive strictly on the dollars spent by fickle super-geeks who will only buy a hop bomb of imperial stout.

As much as I love Surly, the only consistent lately has come by the way of Abrasive. Over Rated and especially Furious have been drastically inconsistent lately. But then again over the past few months I have ran into the same issue with Two-Hearted as well. I'm still a Surly drinker for life, just not every weekend.

I drink a bit of Furious, probably a four pack every other week. I have never tasted this inconsistency some of you speak off. Every time I drink Furious it tastes like Furious.
