I always considered a shelf turd to be a beer that doesn't sell. Without working in a liquor store I wouldn't know what they are.

You all are listing really good beers that are readily available.

I don't really understand. I agree with you list completely, some really awesome beers BUT you're basically describing any beer that doesn't sell ou or is very seasonal.

No offense to the OP, but the definition of "shelf turd" as I understand it, is wrong. A shelf turd is a tongue in cheek expression for finding a desirable, usually expensive, sometimes rare beer on the shelf. Usually a surprise, a beer you don't expect to see on the shelves. You almost have to be in a new store to find these surprises to call them "shelf turds". Example, I'm out of state and find a single Biscotti Break Natale shelf turding for anyone to buy. In my area that is a beer I cant get, so the allure is higher.

Yes, all the Belgian, German and British super beers in their respective country section of my favorite bottle shop that frequently has dust on the bottles. Usually the Brits have the most dust, but most all of Sam Smith's lineup of beers are so awesome!

It just plain tastes better when you get it for $1.50 a 330 ML bottle.

Well put. The term is ignorant and inflammatory. This thread is a "message board turd".

Seems the recurring theme is pricy bombers and old ipas.

People citing Double Jack as a shelf turd, those are the bombers not the 12oz bottles, amirite?

Even thinking the phrase "shelf turd" aloud in my head makes me feel dumber by degrees.
If this keeps up, I'm quitting beer altogether.

It seems people are trying to ask without asking what they need to trade for/buy/wait in line for. Or on the other hand, sort of... brag(?) about how "awesome their local bottle shop is". It's all fun. Don't hate me. I just don't get why people love top 10 lists!?

I assumed "shelf turds" were just beers that sat around a while and didn't sell. And in that case I don't understand people putting IPAs on their lists.

I don't really apply the "readily available" part to my shelf turd definition. There's a liquor store around me that has bottles of Southern Tier Oat that are over a year old (the beer has been discontinued, I believe). This beer is drinking insane right now.

Also, Victory at Sea sits on shelves in my area as well. It's 11 bucks and the label is not eye-catching so I think most people who don't know about it just pass on it. Their loss, it's easily top 5 in Porters for me.
