C'mon, Jack! I mean, it's a nice story and all, but there's no need to hurt my feelings. :stuck_out_tongue:

I truly think I could drink exclusively Heller-Trum (am I doing it right, @boddhitree?) beers for the rest of my life and not feel like I'm missing out. The base Maerzen beneath their everyday offering, this Doppelbock, the Urbock, even the Weizen -- they all deliver on so many levels. Interesting seasonals like the Krausen...and the Helles is such a beautiful, under-appreciated easy drinker.

...still need to try the Fastenbier. :flushed:

So many great beers in their line-up.

You really need to track down that Fastenbier this year. So do I, for that matter (and I've had it before!).

MJT, you are indeed correct that Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier is a very tasty beer. As I mentioned in my beermail that I sent you I had a chance to drink this on cask at the Yards Smoke’em if Yous Got’em beer event. I went back for multiple pours of that beer. My quick review of this beer was: “Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier: 4.5, medium smoke, very tasty!”

I rated the various beers on a scale of 1-5 and Fastenbier received a well-deserved 4.5.

    Cheers!

An excellent Kellerbier from Beck-Bräu, a small brewery in Trabelsdorf, a village near Bamberg. Orange-golden color, firm head. Overall, a very fresh and crisp appearance. Good carbonation, nice malty first impression, followed by a perfect Pilsner-like hoppiness. Background of light sour-fruity yeasty taste. What I liked best, was the perfect bitterness.

That looked like a pretty nice box of goodies you posted earlier! Really, you can't go wrong with Franconian kellerbier.

Unrelated, but I'm amazed that "Beck" and "Beck's" exist side-by-side in Germany. Heck, the logos even look a little similar at first blush.

Very, very nice description of this beer -- and Franconian Kellerbier in general! Prost!

The "Miltenberger" name is due to copyright issues in the US with the name "Faust". If anyone ever wants to take a tour of Faust, let me know. I work in the brewery and can give a pretty detailed tour in English.

Don't know if Beck's/ABInbev ever attempted at sueing them. I wouldn't be surprised. But maybe they just don't bother because it's a small and local family-brewery that doesn't distribute nationwide.

Tonight's gem from my Bamberg Bier-box: Weiherer Urstöffla from Brauerei-Gasthof Kundmüller. What can I say? It's near perfection. It goes as a Dunkles, but really it's just something of its own. The color is not reddish-gold/brown/yellow, but straight red! Beautiful creamy head. The nose picks up an intense smell of malts, almost like smelling the unhopped, unfermented, pure wort (...now that I know what it smells like).
The first sip gives the same impression. Malt, malt, malt. All over it. Just perfect, very aromatic, not too sweet at all, just right. And then, without at first consciously tasting it while drinking, a distinct note of noble hops. The aftertaste is even pleasantly bitter, which comes as a surprise after the smell and first taste.
An overwhelming beer that I want more of. And I want to try the other beers from that brewery. The style is rather independent I'd say. Definitely not a Dunkles, rather a Rotbier/Vienna Lager kind of thing.

This brewery was supposed to be on our original beer & Bike tour. Maybe next time.

I first tried a Weiherer offering at café Abseits in Bamberg, their Bock. Could not get enough - loved it!!

    Prosit!!

Can't do anything before the new year, but I'm flexible after that!

@herrburgess if you are going to anywhere in Germany during Fastenbierzeit you'd better be in Bamberg!!! :grinning:
