I tend to be a fast drinker with most things. During our tastings I find I'm usually the first or one of the first people done with the current pour. The other night I did nurse a 12 oz BCBBW for two quarters during Monday Night football.

I'd say I'm about the same, 20-30 minutes on average to drink a beer. However, if you engage me in really good conversation and keep the beer coming, I'm known to down them fairly quickly. I think I get lost in what's going on when that happens and don't realize I'm drinking so fast.

While somewhat style dependent, I am in the slow camp. Probably 20 - 30 minutes for a twelve ounce "normal" beer. In the summer with something nice and frosty on a hot day, than I will drink quickly. I do like experiencing the changes in flavor as the beer warms up. A big beer or a bomber - not unusual for me to nurse it all evening or afternoon, and still have some of a bomber left for the next day. Read, watch TV, jump on WBAYDN, and just sip slowly.

I'm really surprised at these responses. I remember in the old days drinking 3-4 an hour. Now, almost no matter what the style or ABV, it takes more like 45 minutes to an hour per bottle. Oh, and I can relate to HighWine

Depends on style and whether or not I'm properly hydrated. I try to have a couple of glasses of water before I start drinking beers so that I am not using the beer to quench my thirst.

However to give you an idea, I just took a 3 hour train the other evening and I brought a few beers along to occupy myself. Didn't have the opportunity to drink water before hand, so the first pale went down in a matter of minutes. The following, another pale but a tad stronger, probably about 20-30 minutes. Then I grabbed an Anchor Bwine, that one took probably an hour.

Agree. Most heavier stuff I savor and love to see how it changes over a period of time. I usually only let IPA's last half that time. Just a personal preference.

Interesting, because I tend to do the opposite. If I'm chatting with people/in a conversation, I ignore the fact that my glass has been empty...

10-15 minutes on a pale ale or amber ale etc.

    usually 30-45mins on stouts n porters !

I tend to drink faster when at a bar/pub regardless of style

We should probably break this down to average size sips and the average sips per every 5 minutes or so as it relates to ABV and bottle size. Glassware is critical too.

It's also sad to note that I'm kind of serious about this…

No research worth doing is too meaningless.

From my days of Miller Lite, I have a habit of wanting to pound a tasty IPA/DIPA. I have slowed considerably after making myself conscious of this. I'd say, for a IPA, somewhere around 20 minutes. Of course all of these times vary on style and ABV. I love stouts and full-bodied beers and try my hardest to extend the time out as much as I can to notice the beers evolution.

True. There may already be years of exhaustive research done on this by some federal agency.

In addition to the ABV level, the sequence is relevant. On Friday afternoons, the first one goes down in about 15 minutes - it's usually a lower ABV. By Saturday afternoon, the same beer would take me 30 minutes. And who's paying is also relevant. My treat? Drink slow. Someone else's treat? Drink a little faster. Buyback? Slam it down.

depends on my mood, weather, style, company. I might drink a stout in an hour or I kill it in 30, I might chill on an IPA/DIPA for 30- 45 minute or I might down it in 15. Just depends, I've never timed it but sometimes I drink fast sometime slow. I just enjoy it either way.
