Why does my Dark Lord 2012 taste like green apples?

I've already had two '12s and got zero green apple flavor. I did actually like 2011 better out of the gates, but thought it was terrible with a year on it. Need to see where this one goes.

Didn't notice it when I tried it on tap at DLD, but then again, it is hard to notice green apple in a ~12% by weight sugar solution.

Apples or not, I just don't think it's a good beer anymore. Let's face it though, me saying that isn't probably going to do anything to my ability to trade my remaining bottles.

true, but i think that's partly because you and some other posters who have a reputation for shitting on everything, aren't taken too seriously by the population at large when you say something isn't good.

 

True. I'm trying to get a friend to open one of this many bottles. That way I can keep my one 11 and one 12 in tact. I did get a chance to try the 10 about a year ago and loved it.

 

The bottle that I had at DLD everyone said green apples. I opened another bottle on Monday, same green apples flavor and aroma. (These bottles were picked up during different time slots) It was almost undrinkable, by far the worst DL I have ever had, and that's coming from someone who usually enjoys DL.

I maybe opening another bottle from my allotment tonight. I'm hoping it tastes fine because I'm opening it with about 6 people who have never had DL and are curious about it. I want it to show well.

I had one bottle the night of and one the next day, both were a lot sweeter than last year, but had no "green apple" flavor at all.

 

serious question: how much do you estimate you spend each year on beer you hate, including shipping, driving, event costs, etc?

 

How is green apple an off flavor? Some of the best stouts I've had have that flavor. IMO, its a sign of a good RIS rather than a sign of a bad one. Bad stouts taste like straight bourbon or chocolate additives.

 

Funny, I thought '11 was sweeter than '12. Go figure.

The answer to the first is not much. Dark Lord is probably the only example of that this year, although in fairness, I didn't know I wasn't going to like it until after I had purchased. I didn't like '11, but I did like '10. The only beer I'll go spend money on I knowingly hate now is either to pick it up for trading partners or if I know I can get something I do like in trade for it.

Find out I hate? With all those costs last year we might be looking at four figures (gas and shipping adds a ton). Hate is a pretty strong word though, my average beer review is in the 3.6's, which to me means an above average beer. If you change that to "beer I knowingly don't want", it is in the 4 figures for last year.

This year, it's also just the DL. I have only drank once in the past 45ish days (well twice if we're counting the 10 oz of beer I had over 7 hours at DLD), so my costs are greatly reduced.

 

hate was probably the wrong word, but you answered my question, thanks. i was wondering what kind of money was involved here. i know your disposable income is pretty high, but i figure you (and some others i see who don't seem to like much of what they review) would move on to a different hobby or, like you have, start spending a lot less.
