Why does my Dark Lord 2012 taste like green apples?

I'm always a little sad when a potential argument evaporates. Especially between seasoned arguers with long memories.

I think it might be a natural part of the process. I've been in the fortunate position of getting to try many of the "whales" that a lot of people want. After a while, I think a lot of us get burned out on chasing everything that comes along, particularly as that rarely is there anything particularly "new." The sentiment in my particular group of friends is along these lines, particularly with chasing whales.

My own personal decrease in my amount of drinking is due to my marathon training and possible job transition that requires a certain level of physical fitness. I've dropped 12 lbs since I pretty much stopped. Guess all those tasting calories really do add up.

Ha ha, unfortunately I now find levitation to be one of the few voices of pure reason on this site, and almost always give the benefit of the doubt.

If brewerys gave refunds for off flavors White Birch would have went under a few weeks after it released bottles.

Same here. '11 was insanely sweet (in DL terms) compared to this year's.

seems reasonable. that's partly why i stopped trading and started drinking local. too bad that kind of maturity is only available in hindsight, despite what we tell people just getting into the hobby.

    pro wrestling?

Trying to go Mulder and Scully here.

Hysterically, I once asked my job to transfer me to Kentucky so I could join a pro wrestling school there.

Ha! Good point...but anyway, I recall that Descutes was giving refunds for infected bottles of 09 Abyss, and I think Cigar City offered them for Rum Big Sound...but this is not exactly an infection...so who knows....

FWIW, I drank a '12 the other day and it was excellent, no Acetaldehyde in my bottles. The rest of my bottles will be laid to rest for a couple years, it's better that way IMHO.

Boulevard did for off-flavors in Chocolate Ale, and as noted in another thread, Central Waters may be about to issue refunds for sour notes in Peruvian Morning.

Since 6 months (give or take) from now will be my first taste of Dark Lord ever, I'm hoping that even if my bottles do have green apple, somehow it's still enjoyable.

I don't care that there is a chance it tastes like green apples I would still risk it and trade for one.

Had a taste at DL day. Definitely got green apple or cherry to it. Didn't really have enough to narrow it down, but the first reaction was "this might be bad..."

Boy, people really jumping off a bridge on this one, huh. Tried a bottle with a buddy that went this year and didn't notice any off flavors, actually thought it was much better than last year and nowhere near as sweet, though obviously still a super sweet beer (last year's was pretty bad in that department). Had some interesting/strange flavors going on in there but none that screamed of green apple to me. Blows if there are some bad bottles going around but don't kid yourself, there's tons of people out there that for a variety of reasons would fan the flames on this thing.

I've opened three since DLD, one last night in fact, and haven't had any "off" flavors. What I have noticed is that it tastes just like last year's DL after the coffee had faded, which took about two weeks. I'm assuming that last year we got some of the freshest DL ever, probably bottled that week, and it was my favorite fresh vintage ever. I think that this year they didn't push it and had this stuff bottled for a few weeks before the event, which would explain my frowny face when there was no coffee aroma or flavor.
