Pale Ale and IPA were used interchangeably and inconsistently in 19th-century Britain. In some breweries the IPA would be stronger, in others the Pale Ale. Bitter has been used even more generally for any sort of Pale Ale sold on draught.

Until recently, beers were almost never called Bitter inside a brewery. Usually Pale Ale or IPA.

But what about Pale Stout? Doesn't that count as a genuine style? No dark malts at all in those.
