Jerry, that sounds mighty tempting: excellent beer and excellent company. I will have to see what I can do.

I have only had the pleasure of drinking Winged Nut and Zwickel and I sure would like to try some of the other Urban Chestnut beers. Florian is a very talented brewer (and a true gentleman to boot)!

    Cheers!

I still think that by U.S. "craft" standards, it's a pretty good value. But when I think about how a case of 20 bottles in Germany costs about the same as 3 bottles here, it's a deterrent for my purchasing it regularly, I have to admit.

Smoked beers are some of my very favorites. Schlenkerla Urbock is the one I get most often, but everything else from them is great as well.

I also dig smoked porters. Captain Lawrence makes a really good one, but I also will get Lavery's Belfast Black from time to time (that one has a much more mild smoke character). Alaskan is the best, but since I have to trade to get it it's a rare treat these days.

I am happy to see more of them on the shelves these days. Just last Friday I had a couple that were new to me- Jack's Abby Smoke and Dagger (very good smoked schwartzbier, and made for repeat drinking), Fort Collins Out of the Ashes (kind of like a smoked helles- it started good, but got a bit harsh midway through the bomber), and Stone's Vanilla Smoked Porter (another one that started nice, but really needed more residual sugars for balance and drinkability). Not all were winners, but it's still good to see stuff like that out there.

I also saw a smoked barleywine by Atlantic Brewing Co. that I left on the shelf, but will likely get to soon enough.

A BIG +1 to Lavery's Belfast Black. That is indeed a tasty beer!

    Cheers!

I feel like that would be an odd clash of flavors... both smoked beers and barleywines have such powerful, robust flavor profiles unique to their own style that I am having a hard time picturing how they would work together.

What was it called? I can't find anything like that listed on Atlantic Brewing's BA entry

Rauch is the way to go! Can't say I've noticed the tendency in Victory's St. Victorious (an excellent dopplebock)but both the Schlenkerla Marzen and Urbock are great examples. I drive 300+ miles to Shangey's in Emmaus to stock up every year. Gave a bunch of different beers to a co-worker, including Schlenkerla Marzen - she said it was like drinking jerky! Also, a couple of years ago Shiner was producing Smokehaus, a mesquite smoked beer. Guess I was the only one in the area drinking it because I got the end of the pallet cheap!

I do, but they begin and end with Aecht Schlenkerla.

Recently tried Swamp Head's Smoke Signal smoked porter. Big body, lots of chocolate, lots of smoke, but ABV not that high and pretty easy drinking. Probably one of my favorite smoked beers besides Smoking Wood, which of course can't really be enjoyed in too large of quantities.

Vampire Slayer was the first beer I had where I noticed a lot of smoke. I enjoyed it a lot, but I've only had one actual rauchbier; Flying Dog's Dog Schwarz. I drank the whole 750 ml bottle without a problem. So I've come to the conclusion I like the style.

I was hooked the day I opened an Alaskan Smoked Porter in 2001.

That entry describes it as an English-style barleywine, more malty than hoppy, which I can see working. Heck, if barrel aging works with that type of beer I'm willing to give the smoked one a shot.

You live in NJ. Take a trip to Peekskill. They usually have a smoked beer or two on tap and I find them delicious. Not even my favorite style but they are gooooood.

I've tried at least 3-4 now and haven't really cared much for any. I had a German rauchbier that was more tolerable than the others but still not my cup of tea.
