I bought a growler of Green Bullet a couple weeks ago on vacation in SD. I liked it. Not my favorite, but I did enjoy it and would do it again on my next visit. I still can't find their Palate Wrecker, it's driving me crazier...

When it gets over triple I prefer the multiplication method. Quad IPA sounds terrible. I'd prefer a double double IPA. Need to call IN N OUT to get approval though.

Just wait for quadruple IPAs in 2014.

It's kinda hard to enjoy a meal when everything on the beverage side is cranked up.
Pish. As the abv's climb above the 9% region. Some of us will remember the history and call it a barleywine. It's kinda like how gentrification does when the real estate agents start claiming a neighborhood has a new name because the old one isn't marketable to the up and comers.

I though Knee Deep Simtra was terrific, I like Ports Mongo, and Hopsickle. Hopslam is 10% and i wouldn't call it a boozy mess of a beer, although its not my favorite. I don't know if there's a point of diminishing returns, but it would seem likely that adding more hops is good only up to a point, after that it's a waste. Intense Hop assault = Abrasive at a sane 8%, wish I could get some without having to trade for it, seems like perhaps Surly is a little light this year on production. Surly's Wet Hop this year was only about 25% of last year.

It is just crazy marketing. Don't buy them. Let them rot on the shelves. We all know that a Triple IPA is not even a real style of beer with characteristics that a beer judge can rate against.

    That's just a regular double, right? It's only 8.5% as I recall

I don't know, after you get past 8% the line kinda blurs where one stops and the other takes off, same with IPA to DIPA. Most IPA's are 6.8 to maybe 7.2 ABV, Dipa's around 8%, but the difference in taste is where it's noticeable with the bigger malt backbone, and they tend to be not quite as sharply bitter. I think Mongo and Hopsickle and Knee Deep are in the same class based on drinking them, ABV set aside. Is there a clearly defined line by any measure? So it follows with ABV just like IBU's, both can be measured, but perception will vary from one palate to another. You may think boozy, I might not, but at 10% I've never considered Hopslam a boozy brew, do they market this as a triple? I don't think so.

I always thought triples started at or around 10%. 8% is a pretty average double IMO. Hell, Jai is 7.5% and that's considered a single.

Also I could barely choke down Simtra when I had it so I guess I'm in the triples aren't my thing camp.

I'm gone off memory here but isn't HF Ephraim at 9.5% ABV labeled a PA? I don't think I've ever seen a brew from HF from their web sight labeled an IPA. I guarantee you Ephraim is a handful, and I would never ever call it a PA as compared to others in the market, although technically it is a pale ale, brewers discretion.

Ugh. I miss the days when Boston Lager and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale were considered "hoppy."

The problem with conversations like this thread about beer categorizations is that it doesn't really matter.

DFH 120 could be a double IPA, triple IPA, quad IPA, or barleywine...
Yet its still the same beer no matter what its called. Whatever category it is in doesn't matter, we drink beer, not categories.

I haven't had that beer, but the ABV tells me all I need to know -- that beer's not what they're advertising it as. It's a super hopped up Double IPA, but the ABV's too low to be what other people consider a "TriPA."

It's like Three Floyds calling Zombie Dust an APA.

Sounds like you simply just need to move on ... the fans of this sub-style thank you though for making more noise for their cause. If you don't like the style then don't order one. ;-)

BTW, the style is not going away as some of the best IPA brewers have yet to tackle it.

Ding. Marketing dog whistle stuff for beer noobs.
If it's an American brew with above say 8.5%abv for the random cut off point. It's an American (style) Barleywine Ale. An ABA, if you will.

There was already a name for these "Triple IPAs", there called American Barleywines.

I don't disagree with you. I was just merely stating something pertinent to the threads topic.
