Agreed. I'm not going to bash DD, but I have to admit I didn't have the best time when I went to the Bella Vista event last year. The place was an absolute mad house when I stopped by, and even though I arrived a half hour before the start of the event, it was standing room only when I arrived.

Shrug. If I lived near by I'd still go, because the draft list was absolutely killer. However, as someone from out of town, I have to pick and choose what I can reasonably attend, and this just isn't going to be on my list of events to attend this year. However, it's not as if one exactly has to struggle to find another worthy event during Philly beer week to take its place.

yeah i can see that...we stayed for 2-3 beers and then went somewhere else. that's the fun of it though - last year we left the monks LA event bc it was so insanely crowded and walked to grace tavern where they had older vis, framboise, mongo, anny ale and a bunch of other LA/port stuff and there was like 8 people there. the brewers from RR, LA, SN all showed up too and were talking to everyone there.

it turned out to be one of the better events we went to and no one seemed to know about it bc people were too busy fighting over a $10 glass of a beer that might have been in the same barrel that duck duck was in like 3 years ago. oh, and it was kinda flat too. ::rimshot::

In 2010 beer camp made a porter called exporter then vinnie put it in a barrel to make exportation. It's really good, or at least it was last year.

The Drafting Room had a keg last summer, not sure if anywhere else had it....it was RIDICULOUSLY good. I think I went back three separate times for a pour.

teresa's had this as well (and if IIRC they've had a few of them they've tapped throughout the year).

South Philly Tap Room tapped a keg at their PtY release a couple months back. It's pretty damn tasty

I don't know how I missed these events in the previous years, but what are we looking at as far as a selection? Like, no brainer if you're in the area good

There's some information on the website. http://www.devilsdenphilly.com/events.html

Probably will be more as we get closer to Philly beer week.

Was planning a Philly pub crawl (Monk's, McGillans, Brauhaus Schmitz, etc.) via chauffeured limo for a bunch of guys to celebrate a birthday. Tentatively scheduled for 6/02 but I have now become aware that that is the first Saturday of Beer Week. I'm now suggesting that we postpone until after 6/10. Is PBW the major shitstorm (crowds causing insufferable waits between drinks) that I think it is?

It really depends on what event you go to. If you're planning on going to a RR Event or a Founders event that will have CBS for example, yes that will be a total shitstorm. There are plenty of other events going on where if you plan it right you will be fine no matter what day you choose to do it.

Completely agree. Also, I got the impression that location had a lot to do with the popularity of certain events as well. The last thing I would have expected was a big crowd at the Good Dog pub for a Stone event, but sure enough, that's what there was.

On the other hand, I went to an oustanding Ballast Point event at Teresa's Next Door that I thought for sure would be a mob scene, but it actually turned out to be a pretty mellow event.

It seemed like most of the city events were extremely crowded, much more so than I would have ever expected. I went to the North Coast events at Bishop's Collar and Sidecar, and both events were just packed. I was going to stop by the Kite and key for their Troeg's event (I think), but the place was so packed, I decided not to stop in.

On the other hand, I stopped by Kraftwork on Sunday afternoon for their Ithica brewing tap takeover, and the place was nearly empty. So I think it's something of a crap shoot as to how crowded most of these events are going to be. Nevertheless, I agree with Jonvan04.... you can almost be certain that any RR, Founder's, Bells or Hill Farmstead event is going to be very, very crowded.

Depending on the time of day you're talking about, Monk's, Brauhaus Schmitz and McGillan's will be crowded on a Saturday regardless if it's Beer Week or not.

Brauhaus Schmitz isn't hosting any PBW events this year, so they should be business-as-usual. McGillan's will be also be unaffected: they host few PBW events and none on the 2nd. Monk's has 4 Hands from 4-6pm, but I wouldn't expect it to be much more crowded than normal.

I'd check the schedule anyway: if you're going to be in town enjoy some of the great things PBW has to offer, don't avoid it. (Alternatively, you can look at the schedule and avoid bars during event times... or at least )

My guesses for probable shitstorms on the 2nd: Johnny Brendas' 11am Firkin takeover and Farmers Cabinet's 11:30am Mikkeller event. The rest should only see moderate upticks, though I may be underestimating the draw of some events.

Thank you all for the advice. Maybe we'll still crawl on 6/02...I've roughly mapped out a route, and we can always just tell the driver to keep going to the next stop if we see a line out the door. Cheers!

Random PBW updates (it's been a while):

    - Farm Cab is starting to pump out taplists (see their website). The Monday 6/4 Cellar Keg list and the Sat. 6/9 U.K. Beer Fest (just submitted the latter to calendar) list = :grinning:

    - There's a chance that the Maine Beer Co. tap takeover scheduled for Hawthorne's might be taking place at their new spot, The Cambridge (1509 South St), instead if it opens in time.

    - Little bummed that Sidecar and Kraftwork aren't doing PBW this year but they usually bring it yearround anyways so no biggie there.

    - Has anyone heard a peep about that Fishtown festival that was supposed to happen by Frankford & Girard on 6/9? Seems odd that there are no details yet while the other PBW neighborhood fests (Manayunk, U. City, E. Passyunk) are fleshed out.

Is the official site the only place to go for information about PBW events? That's fine if it is, but I find it a bit cumbersome to use, at least on my computer server. Part of the problem is that there are sooooo many events, it takes a while to scroll down through the different events, checking the event details along the way.

As I recall, in the past there have been several other sites where you could obtain event information about PBW, which is why I ask.
