doesn;t torpedo use citra hops? i know it's "only" 7.2%abv but if you want to taste that hop variety.... does it have to be 8%

or do you actually mean the Kern River variety? good luck with that.... move to socal.

Torpedo uses some citra hops along with magnum and crystal.

Yeah but if you can pick out Citra in that beer, then you have a much better palate than I.

The citra is clear but is fighting for space, KRBC is the Citra flavor bomb.

How do you think they should do it better? I think it's awesome that they even bother to spread it out over a few days, so it's not like you're fucked if you don't get there at 3AM on the one day it's available.

This is incredibly stupid. They brew so little because:
    1) Kern River is very small and in the middle of nowhere.
    2) Citra Hops aren't exactly abundant.

If you don't know what you're talking about, don't say anything.

you do know how small KRBC is right? they'd brew more if they could. I remember having this exact conversation with the brewer there before. they are at capacity and lack funds to expand. they aren't purposely trying to deny you beer or create hype.

Citra is my favorite hop, KR is terrific as is ZD, KR is a tough get in NC. What does Ithaca use in Flower Power, tastes like Citra when ultra fresh.

Thanks for the insult. Sorry, don't buy it. You want to talk incredibly small? Hess Brewing in San Diego. 1.6BBL system. 20x20 shack. Easy enough to get all their beers monthly.

If you are trying to tell me there are only enough Citra hops to bottle 120 cases per year - whatever.

Try and argue your point without calling someone stupid.

If they lack funds - it's their fault. Hess, Manzanita, and Alpine out here in SD ( tiny breweries ) pulled millions from investors to expand this year. Kern has a good rep and could easily gain the same funds - if they can't it's one of 2 things:

    1. They aren't interested.
    2. They have no freaking clue how to run a business.

I think they shouldn't allow 6 bottles per person which does nothing but fuel ebay and $40/bottle Citra.

Guess what - the customer is always right.

instead of being a dick on this forum why not email them with your brilliant business strategies. better yet, open your own brewery if you've got it figured out. i know the people at KRBC and they just want to make great beer and sell it to great people. you also clearly have no idea how small KRBC is and how small of an area they are from and how isolate they are. my suggestion, don't come into threads with the sole intention of being an asshole.

    blah blah blah.

Yes because as you know you have to open a brewery to have an opinion on beer and/or breweries. I guess everyone on BA is a brewer.

Actually, I do have an idea as I have been there. Thanks though!

Who is on the forum calling someone an asshole? Me or you?

First, a smart person can say stupid things. Everyone does it. Calling what you said stupid isn't insulting you.

Second, there are plenty of podunk breweries whose stuff stays on the shelves because no one wants it, that doesn't prove anything.

Third, Kern isn't the only one buying these hops. And even if they were, they still have the problem of needing to brew everything else too and not having the space. There's a reason Hopslam and Younger are seasonals, it's because the breweries can't make them year-round, they're too demanding. The same is probably true of Citra.

Anyway, you're the one who came into this thread and questioned the motives of a well respected brewer for no reason at all, your reaction to the obvious and inevitable pushback is amusing.

The pushback is what amuses me.

If you think the beer is "so demanding" it can only be made 2x a year - give me a break. We aren't talking BA Stouts or sours that require years in the barrel. We are talking 21 day IPAs.

Amazing how FFF can pump out Citra hopped ZD year round isn't it? =) Sure they are bigger - but I guarantee Kern could access enough Citra hops to make their Citra DIPA once per month. It's a HYPE MACHINE - every brewery needs one. Hopefully I can bitch about it without you guys puffing up your chests and going into irrational defense mode.

No need to chase our tail on this one. If you like you can contact me directly and I can explain why we do things the way we do. My e-mail is [email protected]; if you prefer a phone conversation call the brewery at 760-376-2337 and ask for Eric. That rings through to the pub, so if I am not available just leave a message.

    Cheers,

I don't mean to put you on the spot, but it seems to me it would clear up much more "Confusion" if you would just explain it here...
Unfortunately, I haven't ever tasted your stuff being from Michigan, but you have a lot of fans here.

I think the people who seem to be "Confused" are in the minority. I've emailed Eric on many occasions and he has responded to all of my questions in a timely and professional manner. Shoot him an email with your questions, comments, etc and he will get back to you. He's cool like that.
