Peat is partially decomposed organic matter (mostly mosses and shit like that), not a malt grain. You can flavor grains with peat or peat smoke, but AFAIK, cannot substitute peat for malt.

There's plenty of peat in Scotland and they've been brewing there a long time. The fact that they didn't and don't use peat in brewing suggests that better beer is made without it.

According to Roger Protz, Thornbridge Saint Petersburg is made with peated malt.

If that's not true take it up with him! (It didn't taste smoky to me).

I think Traquair House also uses peat malt.

Whether or not it's traditional, I like using it in the Scottish beers I brew. Otherwise, I might as well brew English-style beers (which I also do).

Why not ? They are what Scottish brewers brew anyway. There is no "Scottish style" in Scotland.Just in some cases traditional Scottish descriptions like 80/- of beers brewed throughout the UK.

Some Scotch ales are brewed with peat smoked malt. They taste like scotch. There is no historical precedent for this for that style as Scotch ale has nothing to do with Scotch the distilled whiskey spirit. Its just something some American craft brewers do. I myself don't care for peat smoked flavor, particularly in beer. I like smoked beer but not peat smoked. I also am not much a fan of Islay Scotch for that reason. I prefer Highland Scotch, but even more so I prefer Bourbon.

What bothers me about this is that they are called Scotch Ales, an ancient and well established beer style basically the same as Burton Ales.Scotland is a country with a proud and glorious brewing tradition and many of the beers described these days as Scottish and Scotch Ales are demeaning and misleading to this.Scotland really reserves better.

I would be surprised if Brewdog hasn't done one.

Had some interesting peaty beers last night at a tasting. I would recommend that you look for the White Label RIS Peated (Bowmore & Bowmore BA) from Emelisse, as well as "Hemel & Aarde BA Bowmore Coal Ila" from De Molen. All three are quite the peat bombs. If you enjoy Islay scotch, these beers are for you. Cheers!

Edit: both White Labels are Bowmore, but one is labeled as "peated" and the other is not. Try both.

Brett Peat Daydream gives you that nice dry earthy smoke flavor.

Aside from the peat malt (if they use it), I believe that Scottish ales use less hops than British beers.
