With the second release of chocolate rain out, it seems much easier to trade for a bottle. What are the first batch of chocolate rains going for? Has the second release of CR driven down the value of a first release bottle? What beers would trade 1 for 1 for a batch one chocolate rain?

The value has gone down on the first batch, but it is still worth more. Which is ironic because the beer is better fresh.

In my opinion new vintages never run down the trade value of a first bottling of something that can age for years.

the frenzy on the first release peaked within a week of it being announced. ridiculous offers were made and accepted. i traded one of my 2012 bottles with a sour in the rye for some nice barrel aged jackie o's beers and the others i sent out for $34 in good beer.

Haven't seen it much at all on the forums with the exception of the BA DL release last weekend.

I personally like a lot of aspects of CR, and I don't think b1 had peaked yet,

I can tell you that I personally would possibly do a 1:1 for:

BT'09 (I want another bottle of this though, so may be bias)
    75cl Blabaer
One-off 2003 or younger Belgian lambics/gueuzes of interest
Other similarly rare bottles that will age well

I don't think it has hit a mega-whale status yet because it was re-released. I do, however, believe that it has that potential once it does peak and there have been 3-4 releases.

If you're looking for one right now, your best chance will likely be people offering them in FT threads as opposed to tossing out an ISO.

I made a half-hearted attempt at trading my b1 CR for a 75cl Blabaer a while back. I got an offer of a 375ml + ??? (can't rememer) but I turned it down, as I wanted enough Blabaer to share with my tasting group to avoid thimble-sized samples. I'd still consider doing that trade in the future if anyone finds this thread many moons from now (as I'll probably still have the b1 CR as I have no real plans for it at this point, other than working on a CR vert.)

I doubt having a 2nd batch would deter the value of batch 1 by much. I sometimes catch myself thinking the same way when a new batch of a rare beer is coming, but I don't really see it. Batch 1 will always be batch 1. Look at Black Tuesday: 09 is a whale. 10 and 11 are much easier to trade for because they're not first batch (bottling)

I'd be curious to see people opinions of this trend for beers that aren't so "whalish." Something like Parabola. Is batch 001 Parabola that much more sought after than batch 002?

Like others have said, releasing a second batch of a highly desirable and cellarable beer like CR is not going deminish the value of Batch 1 really...perhaps only in the eyes of people that merely want to tick CR, regardless of batch....but as more batches are put out, the value of Batch 1 will solidify and increase, IMO...

But in case I am way off
ISO: CR b1 FT: CR b2...

    hit me up if intersted:wink:

Since members only got one of the Batch#1, I can see why it demands a premium. I drank mine with friends recently and am glad I did. I have no idea how it was fresh, but with a year on it, it was stellar.

Was CR batch #2 available outside of the Reserve Society?

No, the RS was given 1 bottle with membership and the ability to buy 2 bottles for a total of 3 per member.

that is true, however up until the second batch it sened to have the trade value as a one off, and i think thats where the. alue went down a bit.

I agree. It will be interesting to see how Grey Monday trades.
