Technically it's a Scottish Ale if it's an ale brewed in Scotland.Otherwise it's technically a misunderstanding.

Not in your area, and possibly all gone now, but Blue Lobster from North Hampton, NH did a brilliant Port Barrel Aged Wee Heavy for their first anniversary called Celtic New Year. You may still be able to trade for that... Their none barrel aged Wee Heavy, Life of Sundays, is also delicious. Hard to find a Scotch ale that beats Backwoods Bastard, though, imho.

As of about 3-4 months ago, yes, it is. My shop just got the BA variants yesterday.

Skullsplitter was the scotch ale that got me started years ago & it's great to see the love in this thread for it. The name truly fits this scotch ale & is a great import purchase. Backwoods Bastard is amazing when it's available, Old Chub is great for its availability, drinkability & price point for everyday drinking. Gotta keep my eyes peeled for Wulver & revisit Scotty Karate again soon.

I will now add Tyranena Sheep Shagger to my recommended Scotch ales after cracking the second out of a sixer my brother in law delivered this Xmas Eve.

Has anyone mentioned Bear Republic Heritage Ale? Pretty straight-forward, tasty, and arguably truer than most US versions to what a "basic" Scotch Ale should taste like (good bit subjective, yes). Reminds me of Belhaven Wee Heavy.

agreed...i was very impressed with this one and the BA version.

while i found seven devils to be better than i expected, it doesn't hold a candle to any of the offerings from French Broad. for shame that no one has mentioned Wee Heavy-er from French Broad

Cigar City BA Big Sound is hands down the best of this class I have been fortunate enough to try. It is a top 3 beer overall for me.

I tried Skull Splitter last night, and apparently that is one that would fall in the category of Scottish ales as well. It wasn't at all what I expected, tasted a lot like champagne!
I wouldn't say it was horrible, just not what I'm into.

Of course it's a Scottish ale, it's an ale from Scotland.Scottish ale isn't a style at all as a visit to that enchanted land will make clear.

Oooh Scotch Ales, you are speaking my language and I love them! Some great suggestions here and a few that I can recommend off the top of my dome (of course a few may be location specific):

    - Oskar Blues Old Chub - higher ABV so be careful with this one.
    - Founders Dirty Bastard
    - Appalachian Brewing Company Jolly Scott
    - Rock Bottom's Winter Tartan
