I haven't had many, since doppelbocks aren't common on the west coast. I did recently try a brandy barrel pumpkin doppelbock from Lakefront that was pretty good, aside from issues with low carb.

I'll pass on rum barrel aging. It doesn't do it for me. For the most part, I feel the same way about wine barrel aging. That being said, I often like the effect that a good bourbon barrel treatment does for a beer.

I can't stand all these young kids and their barrel aged this and their barrel aged that.
    Just give me a bud.

Black Ops. I don't think that BCS is the base stout, but fresh Black Ops is a boozy mess. Aged 2 or 4 years on the other hand, different story.

KBS' base beer is totally unique to itself.

I don't know if I'd consider the Lakefront 25th Anniversary pumpkin lager a doppelbock; it certainly doesn't fit the Reinheitsbegot.

In general, spirit-barrel-aged beers are disappointing to me, and as doppelbocks are a personal flavor preference, having this ruined by bourbon (or whatever spirit is aged in the barrel) is particularly disappointing. I'm either overly sensitive to ethanol and/or heavy distilled spirit flavors, or barrel aged beers are seriously overrated, or some combination of the two. If another doppel/bock never touched a barrel that had previously held spirits, I wouldn't shed a tear.

Typically love barrel-aged beers, but recently tried 4D and BB4D side-by-side at Kuhnhenn. The barrel treatment, while still producing an incredible beer in BB4D, took away much of the complexity of regular 4D. I much preferred the non-barrel 4D.

Gonna level with y'all. I prefer non BA beers. I like booze, but I find it kinda off-putting in beer. Nothing against your preferences, but I don't care for it. It's all good.

You know I'm kind of the same way although I prefer barrel aged wee heavy's, barleywines and old ales, but with stouts I mostly prefer the non barrel aged ones.

You need to try the brandy version of this beer - it's so much better than the bourbon one.

I've tried aging some BBQ & to me it always seems a bit too cardboard/oxidized after about a year+. I like it fresh to 1 year old..

DORIS > BA DORIS to me. Honestly, I'm a beer fan because I like beer. If I liked bourbon, I would buy bourbon.
