Has anyone seen the latest BA ranking of US breweries. Do you have the list? I am having a discussion (family free for all) concerning the ranking of certain breweries and, unfortunately, all we have access to is an old ranking.

To be sure, the ranking does little to change our choices of beer but this request is just to resolve a festering argument of epic proportions...well, not exactly epic...more like jeuvenile.

Thanks for your help in advance,
    Saverio

"BA" as in "Beer Advocate" or "Brewers Association"? "Ranking" as in yearly barrelage or Beer Advocate review "scores"?

If the former, The Brewers Association typically only releases their two lists - Top 50 U.S. Craft Brewing Companies and Top 50 Overall U.S. Brewing Companies in the Spring of the following year.

Here's the Press Release for 2012's totals.

Thanks Jess. BA for Beer Advocate. Beer Advocate had a list for 2006 and 2008 and 2010 that I can find but nothing recent on the web etc. Also, we are looking for rankings of craft breweries based on rated quality and not production. Production rankings starts to creep into the realm of major brewery interests which would make the highest producing craft brewer the tallest short-statured kid.

As an aside, I am surprised that Stone Brewery is getting a 100 score on BA for overall ratings. I have had some of their beers and believe them to be high 80s/low 90s, but an overall 100 had me a bit mystified. Am I alone on this? Is there some level of "popular kid in the class" skewing? To confirm, I really respect their work and appreciate their interest in pushing the envelope, but, with experimentation there is volatility of results.

Thanks again for the link though. I appreciate the help. If we don't get this resolved soon, next year's Christmas will be lonely ...

Gee-zus folks. So we're ranking breweries through mumbo jumbo numbers now. What next? Rankings and ratings for hop varieties? Yeast strains? Beer 'styles'? Varieties of beer glasses? There's a place for this sort of obsessive score carding. Its called rate beer.

Relax, Zimbo. This is a little holiday fun with family. I thought my writing would have made that abundantly clear. Yes, we can be serious and independent consumers, but there is room for some enjoyable debate. Often, we learn or advance our knowledge through this kind of interplay.

Beer Advocate had previously ranked breweries based on membership input. I am just looking for the latest ranking. Let's keep it friendly.

Isn't the rating for Stone (and other breweries in the Places section) based on the experience at the location itself, i.e. tap list/food/atmosphere? I don't believe it is a rating of the brewers distributed output.

No worries, Zimbo. Craft beer friends are friends for life. Well, unless one of them succumbs to drinking mass market barley water.

We haven't done this for a while, although maybe we should consider doing it annually as past brewery, bar, store, etc lists were extremely popular.

I am not sure BKbassist of the details, but the Beer Advocate ranking in 2006 stated: "The most popular and highest rated brewers" based on the aggregate scores of Beer Advocate membership. I just was not sure if BA is continuing with the list and whether the 2012 or 2013 list is available.

Stone's brewery is really lovely, and they have a great network of Stone Stores and the new restaurant at Liberty Station. In that regard, I can certainly understand why it has a 100 rating.

Locking this one down as the question has been answered.
