    Hey all,

How do you see the Armand 4s stacking up with BA Dark Lords? I understand the box sets are still available at some online shops, so that may be holding some people back, but I was thinking the BA Dark Lords would be attainable (not all of them, obviously) with a set of Armand 4s. My main thought was that there might be a tasting group somewhere that landed more than a set of BA Dark Lords and would be interested in trying the Armands, but obviously I have no idea if this is the case or not.

At any rate, I'm curious about others' opinions on a 4:2(+) or 4(+):3 deal. Do you think either of those deals would be fair? Am I way off base? Is anyone trading BA Dark Lords yet? Bueller?

Any and all help is much appreciated.

    Cheers!

    Mark

Hard to say as the cost on the Armand's are a bit higher and a lot of people have already bought them via online. The Armand's are easier to get currently as just the shipping and cost are the big thing, where had to get a ticket to DL day and then get lucky on a ticket to get a bottle.
I think down the line the Armand's will be more valuable as those are it for them where if FFF keeps making BA DL the value should go down.
Would guess 1-1 on them but eventually the Armand series will pull more

The BA DL's will command a much higher trade value based on them not being available online and easy to get for several months vs. only at DLD. The Armand 4's are really good, but it would almost have to be the perfect storm of someone not wanting to order from Europe and forgetting about rarity. Maybe some combo of 4's could do the trick, but I would be hard-pressed to see a trade like this go down.

The Armands are still available, so that really cuts down on the possibility. The other issue, is that most anybody who really wanted Armand has already purchased it. The final issue, is I think half of BA is holding onto Armands in the hopes that they turn into whales, which is probably going to prevent it from happening (or at least prolong it greatly).

have to ask you Sean would you do that deal 3-4 years down the line when the Armand's are not available online?
I would agree with you right now, as the BA DL's are harder to get but I think in time these will be hard to obtain beers in time

You have excellent beers from a world class brewer with a proven track record vs. an over hyped mediocre beer thats been barrel aged with fewer bottles released; take a guess which one wins:wink:

n.b. I think 3 floyds does some things very well, it just does not seem to be stouts to me.

That's cool, and I get it cuz those Armands are damn delicious. However, I'm more of a stout guy than a sour guy, and a big FFF fan on top of that, so I'm interested. Different strokes for different folks

Out of curiosity, have you ever had any of the Dark Lord variants? Or which vintages have you tried? I'll be the first to admit the recent vintages of Dark Lord have been disappointing, but last year's variants were still top notch IMO.

And I think by now most everyone on BA knows of my love affair with '08 Dark Lord :grinning:

It's really hard to say 3-4 years down the road. I would say both would increase in "value" over that time and who knows what either will taste like by that time. We're talking about BA RIS's vs. Gueuze's, so they're really hard to compare in terms of taste & desirability.

The OP was basically asking if a trade of some sort could be done, and my answer is yes. However, it would have to be with the right person and the right bottles. What those specifics are is really hard to guess.

I've enjoyed all the Armand 4's and (most) all the BA Dark Lord's, so trading for either is a win/win, IMO.

Definitely via the boxed sets - plenty of those still out there. Lente was still available as a single until extremely recently - I'm sure there are a few bottles still floating around in shops out there, particularly at ones that don't sell online...

I just had a three way trade go down involving an Armand box set, 2 BA DLs, PiaPT, and Brabantiae. I traded my Armand Set and PiaPT to another tasting group who sent 2 BA DLs to another trader who sent me Brabantiae. Maybe I went a little heavy on my side, but not much. And I couldn't be more happy for this trade.

I have had 08-10 dark lord, i had the 09 with 6months and 1 year, the 08 with 2 years on it and the 10 after a couple of months. I was not impressed at any of the times, and these were not 2oz pours, each time I split bottles with 1 or 2 people.
I also thought Moloko was disgusting.
I just do not find their stouts appealing. Zombie Dust and Gumballhead are amazing!

Great stouts to me are Founders IS, The Abyss, Hunahpu, Buried Hatchet, Black Bear etc...

LOL! Funny cartoon. Reminds me of baseball and hockey cards in the 90's. How many of us have an Eric Lindros rookie card sitting under our bed, just waiting until the future happens?

Armand'4 will either turn into that Eric Lindros rookie card or Partridge in a Pear Tree; everyone has it but doesn't want to give any up to the new kids on the block.

The question really is, how much higher valued will the BA Dark Lord's be in 3-4 years when compared to the Armand 4's. Even if they both appreciate in "value", the BA Dark Lord's will probably always be valued higher.

With that said, how many Armand's would it take for your BA Dark Lord? Then maybe the OP will have an answer.

Those are just words unless you make a trade with the OP. I bet you won't.

It really depends. What if Three Floyds rolls out 3000 bottles of Bourbon or Vanilla Bean DL next year? It's certainly not an unreasonable prospect. Or 10,000 in a couple of years? Sure, there's always vintage value for the completionists, but larger releases do tend to really hurt the trade value of once limited beers.
