If your distaste for belgian yeast is like mine, it comes from market saturation. There are some many people trying something "new" with a belgian twist, and they all taste the same to me. The yeast overpowers and frequently tastes like rotten bananas. The worst style ever is belgian IPA. All the hops just enhances the soapy tones from the yeast. I think brewing belgian styles is an art that most folks doing these days have not mastered.

Every now and then I taste something I love brewed with belgian yeast, but more often than not, they taste like flowers, soap and rotten fruit

It's very sad to me how many people are responding with beers that are lagered. :slight_frown:

Dirty Bastard is pretty tasty as well, though I'll admit that I don't buy it often...

On a side-note, I'm curious as to which quads people jump at. Rochefort 10 and St. Bernardus Abt 12 are great (though expensive), and I'm sure Westy 12 is amazing as well, but most other quads I've had haven't been up to snuff (including Weyerbacher's lineup, though I haven't aged any).

When I was drinking belgians I was drinking stuff with good reputations. Saison Dupont, Chimay Blue, Allagash White. I guess I just got burnt out on the whole thing. Truthfully, I was starting to lose my desire for Belgians and then I went to the Belgian Beer Fest (I had purchased tickets months earlier when my love of them was there). An afternoon of drinking nothing but Belgian yeast put me over the top. I think I have had maybe 3 belgian beers since then and that was in Sept. 2012.

Pumpkin beers are not my dish of tea or Pepper infused beers. Some IPA styles are too much hop bombs for me to enjoy beyond occasionally. Citra Hops are becoming passe!

American Lagers due to uninteresting, one-dimensional flavor. To a lesser extent, dry brown ales due to their malted chocolate and old yeast flavors.

I love these long thread that never die.

I dislike some beers, but never the whole "type". If your leaving out a whole ranger of beers without trying it. Its like a kid saying he hates vegetables. You ask? so have you tasted them? he says no, its looks bad. etc etc. How do know for sure? It took me 3 tries to love and understand oulde gueuze.

Do I love fruit beers in General not really, but it never stop me from evaluating each one, in their turn. Still I dislike some beers, but At least I tried them.:grinning::grimacing:

I know they are well crafted and I did truly enjoy them at a point. Now when I see them on a menu I look right past them. The "belgian" section of my bottle shops has been skipped by me repeatedly. I did drink a Pretty Things Jack D'or this summer and enjoyed it. But like I said, I just can't bring myself to search them out. Before I lost my taste for them I was excited about doing a blind tasting of the trappist quads. I was waiting for a time to do the blind tasting with two friends that I know love Belgians, during that time, I lost my taste for them. Now I have a bottle of all the trappist quads, including Westy 12 just sitting in my basement. I actually think I am just going to give them to my buddy. I am hesitant because I think my Belgian love will come back and I'll be kicking myself for not drinking the Westy, ha. I really don't know what happened.

Can't get into Barleywines, Dopplebocks (too many tasted exactly the same to me), and sometimes Saisons and Sours.

wow you are strong willed. as they say the force is strong with that one. aged Westy is one of the greatest beers I ever had. But then again "Qauds" of Real truly Belgian ale is one my very favorites.

I salute you on your objective, but I will never understand it.

    Cheers!

Oh believe me, I want to drink it, I have no objective to hold out on it. I just don't want to drink it because, right now, I feel like I won't enjoy it as much as I could.

What has been your experience with aging Westy. The one I have is at least three years old, maybe more. I got it before they sold their bricks in the US.

I don't understand why lagers are getting painted with such a wide and bizarre brush. Troegenator, which many describe as having various dried fruit characteristics (I concur with those claims), is an American Lager http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/694/4109/. If you're just referring to American Adjunct Lagers, that's one thing. I can see where the "one-dimensional" comment would come from, but American's are doing amazing things with lagers these days. Look at Hoponius Union out of Jack's Abby, that's an American Lager that satisfies hop heads more so than some of the big name IPA's. Just my $0.02.

Well first off no westy has ever survived longer that 4 to 6 months to age that we have brought back. Once though about 9 years ago. We flew into Amsterdam first from Florida. I was buying beer at

I happened to see a case of some 10 year Westy 12 upstairs. it was 15 frigging euro. I bought 4 lol. Man was it heaven.

-Rauchbiers (with the exception of VERY small amounts of smoked malt [Jack's Abby Smoke and Dagger])
    - Czech Pilsners/Euro pale lagers (can't really deal with that skunky taste)
    - Just about anything with spices/herbs added. I've had a few that I liked, but it has to be very subtle on the additions.
