Prolly posted it in last week's thread, but tomorrow I'm brewing a rye thingie. With hops and rye malt and stuff. And rice hulls, for sure.

For the money, you just can't beat a SS cake pan fly sparge! Seriously, one of the best things I've added for the pre-boil ritual.

Took a couple readings... 80% efficiency. First time use of my own grain-mill a coincidence? I think not.

That's a nice, simple fly sparge setup...when I make something similar I think I might use a larger 12 " cake pan though...batch sparging currently with lower efficiency myself. Cheers.

I considered larger, but this allows me to keep a better eye on the water line inside the cooler. I have never had channeling, and keeping a ratio of 1-1.5" water above the grain bed means that it doesn't really matter that it doesn't drip water at the very edge.

That said I have heard people using 12" pizza pans to good effect.

Got 5 gals of 1.112 Wee Heavy and 5.25 gals of 1.043 APA in the ferm fridge by noon-thirty, the Wee Heavy is split between 2 5 gal Better Bottles for plenty of head space. They are already rockin. Was a great and easy brew day today.

Didn't get the sink drain installed.

Did get some more remodelling done on the new entertainment room, my wife painted all the walls and found 2 cool shelving units and painted them too. We hung one on the wall for bottle display and glassware. Also snagged 2 spinning glide chairs for it, all from Goodwill. Snagged a Coleman 70qt cooler for $6 too so I can jump up and stop stressing about whether I can mash and sparge my big beers easily, or adjusting my liquor to grist ratio all the time.

Brewed for the 1st time this past week. It was a simple a Pale Ale Kit with Cascade Hops. Despite the fact it was -5 degrees actual air temp. I had a blast! Why haven't I done this sooner?! 2014 will be about brewing!!

Probably, but I'm the chemical hygiene/safety guy at work and it might look bad if I blew up my house.

Going with the East India Porter. There will be 1oz of peat-smoked malt in the grist, gonna taste the wort around 30min into the mash, and if it can take it, maybe add another ounce. The journey of 1,000 miles starts with a single step.
Pretty much what I was thinking. Also, tried On the Wings of Armageddon last night, which is an all FF DIPA that is fairly highly rated and locally hyped. I wanted to see if maybe I was just doing it wrong. Nope, which is both good to know and a bummer, cause I spent good money on a beer that I like less that something I just bottled two cases of.

    bottling, racking, cleaning, kegging yesterday.
German pilsner right now. Staying inside - watching the wife shovel the driveway at the moment. Looks cold out there.

My first brew is at about 48 hours of fermentation and all is well. My temperature is on the low side, around 63 degrees. Will that slow fermentation?

    Cheers!

Depends on the yeast, but in general you should expect slightly slower fermentation at lower temperature ranges.

They're a golden bullet for some recipes. They give a lot of complex sweet flavor to lighter styles. I haven't tried to use them in dark styles yet.

I'd soo have a C-clamp on that. I'm cursed though. Are you getting 85% efficiency with this?

I've read that a lot of people use them in pale's much the same way I use honey malt...definitely interested in trying them that way.

It doesn't really move when on top of the cooler, the carriage bolt ends, coupled with the angle of the bolts, keep it from moving.

I'm at 80% at the moment. I saw a jump when I started using the cake pan, and then again when using my own mill. My efficiency has always been better with this fly sparge method, than with batch sparging.

Kegged an Oatmeal stout today and have an extra gallon for experimenting. Can decided where to go with it.
    Coffee is logical, but safe.
Bourdon soaked oak chips might be to overwhelming for the low ABV.
    Brett Trios might be interesting.

    Thoughts?
