NEW SCOTCH ALE (AMERICAN STYLE) SUNDAY!

Greetings and happy NBS from the Jersey Shore. The mercury made it to the 40 degree mark today without a ray of sunshine. Overcast and damp, but better than the nine inches of snow that fell Thursday evening into Friday. Looks like single digits again on Tuesday. That's weather...what can we do?
Today consisted of a good workout and some house cleaning. My wife's been on a tear so I pitched in. I skipped the run today, road clearing is NOT an Ocean County strong suit. Driving, yes; on foot, no.
    So what's left but R&R and a new brew:http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1199/35036/?ba=NiceTaps.
Another goodie from Founders, no surprise.

Oh, and it's been Classical Music Sunday around this abode today, so I'll stick with the Italian theme cue from Utopiajane .... Mom would approve.

All the best, everyone. Have a great 2014. Cheers!

New American IPA Sunday (week 463)

Greetings NBSers from the freezing-rain soaked ridge in Mid Hud Val NY.

I had at least 25 new beers yesterday at @Jeffboyardee123 's bachelor party, many of which were phenomenal, or even better, to celebrate his choice to share a life with one of the finest women I have met.

Today I shared an assortment of hoppy pales, some of which I have had, with BA @doomXsaloon, and this is the new one that was the surprise best of the bunch, but which I didn't review. Hop Drop'n Roll is the name of this NoDa gem, and it is truly delicious. Nicely dry hopped, but not crazy tropical, hints of orange zest, pine, neutral sweet, and some herbal bitter. The taste is stupid yummy, full of all the goodness that is American Hops, pine, citrus, lemon zest, melon, understated bitter, well integrated grainy sweet, perfectly balanced, clean, complex, awesome. Nice mouthfeel frames it well, maybe a touch too much carb. An awesome beer I recommend everyone reading this immediately drop everything and endeavor to get some. Sorry no pic or formal review due to the circumstances of enjoying this. Hope you have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

    Greetings All!

I'm having the last of the Sam Adams Holiday Sampler, the Juniper IPA.
    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/35/99989/?ba=RJLarse

I'd like to say I saved the best for last, but it's not the case. This is just another remnant of the holidays, like the fruit cake nobody wanted to eat. The Christmas lights came off the house yesterday, and were packed away in the cellar this morning, so 'tis the season.

Beautiful sunny day here in eastern Washington, and mild for the season with temps into the mid 40's

Right now I'm watching the game on the frozen tundra, and looking forward to the Saints at Seahawks next Saturday. It will be cold, but not single digit temperatures for that one.

    Until next week,

    Happy Trails!

    New IPA Sunday

Greetings NBS from Stinkin' wet and cold Southern, CT.

Today was really not much to speak of, cold, wet, icy, not a trace of sun, blah, blah, blah. A good day for hangin' with the fam, reading and getting ready for the reality of back to work.

This IPA was a gift from my sister who selected a sampling of all NC beers, all of different styles. I'd like to try more from Mother Earth, heard good things about them:

A final entry for me here today, Eclipse Imperial stout aged in High West Rye barrels...
Lime green wax seal let's you know what you're getting...
Paused the SF-GB game in the background to give this my full attention.
Roasty coffee and char, cocoa and rye whiskey aromas right off the bat
    [IMG]
Taste follows the nose, enhanced by notes of herbs, honey, and rye spice.

I really enjoyed it, but at $33 a bottle, I won't buy another. Their Java Stout edition, on the other hand, was worth going back for seconds (and I did :stuck_out_tongue:).

Alright folks - I'm gonna un-pause the Pack and see if they can pull off a win against a dominant San Fran squad.

    Cheers!

Howdy to all of you fellow NBSers!

Hope all is well with all of you, and I hope your hand gets better Bitterbill. I see that a lot of you are complaining about the weather, but maybe I can make you feel better about this. The forecast for my city tomorrow is a high of -14 degrees with the wind chill approaching -45 degrees. While the forecast stinks, the beer I am drinking doesn't. Deschutes Northwest Pale Ale is absolutely delicious! I may have to buy a case of this while it's fresh.

It pours a clear red with a two finger white head that dissipates very slowly into a cap and leaves terrific lacing. If I was more tech savvy like some of you, I would post a picture for you guys. It looks awesome, but you're going to have to buy some to see it. Aromas of grapefruit and lemon punch you right in the face, and some grassy and peppery notes are standing around watching the ordeal. Taste is much more resiny and bitter, and the taste lingers for a while. It has a very light mouthfeel to it, and there is a decent amount of carbonation. This is quite the sessionable ale.

I am currently debating upon having new beer number two or a glass of scotch to take me to bed. If I choose the former, you'll find out later. If I choose the latter, have a great week everyone!

    Happy New English Stout Sunday!

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/450/3318/?ba=MadCat

Also, happy new brewery and new style Sunday! I had no idea how small the English Stout style was, and that I never had one before. This is Yards Love Stout, what I thought was a good representation of the style. Was on Nitro Tap, which I don't think is necessary but is a good treatment for this stout. Today was a good day, I was finally feeling well enough to have a beer, as I have been recovering from a nasty cold since new years eve. Finally got my driveway fully cleared of snow and ice.

Greetings all from Louisiana! It's a bit comical for me, living my whole life in New England, to see "hard freeze" warnings on local TV channels. Nonetheless, I'm relaxing, dreading the work week and watching some HBO while enjoying a Sixpoint Global Warmer. Solid winter beer with some nice hoppiness:

Survived the snow and cold for now if Chicago, rewarded myself with a thirsty dog Wulaver. What a tasty BA Wee Heavy. Nice malty with tons of vanilla and toffee. Glad I have 3 more. Going to finish the night with a southern chard and then Look out the window and contemplate excuses to tell my wife how to now shovel the driveway

I spent the afternoon/early evening with a friend trying his hand at homebrewing (a SN Celebration clone). Good times were had by all, as well as three new beers for me.

Southern Tier Oak Barrel Aged Barleywine

I bought this bottle when I was in Syracuse last Summer, and just opened it today. It was bottled in February 2012, so it's almost a full two years old. Coolness!

Wow, this was a really good beer. The oak and vanilla come through strongly, making it a lot like a stronger, maltier, less-hoppy version of Burton Baton. I'm not sure how it would come across fresh, but with 23 months of age, it's smooth and tasty. Very good beer.

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/3818/78008/?ba=Roguer

This is the only beer I took the time to fill out an entire review.

    Beer'd World at Large
    APA

The label describes this beer as "dank," and they were not kidding! Beer'd is a local brewery that produces a very, very good DIPA as well as a solid witbier. I was a little nonplussed at the description and the aroma - dank? Sounds like an IPA.

But after drinking, it was a solid APA, and it clocks in at 6.6%. The aroma and flavor are heavily resinous and dank, but the malt bill is just enough to keep it at an APA level.

As an unexpected bonus, the initial tap was on Friday (Beer'd is growler-only), and as such, I'm the first review/had on BA! So take heed: I am officially the benchmark. :grinning:
(I think if I had enough time to sit down and officially review it, it might rate closer to 4.0, FWIW.)

    Smelt Camp Strong Ale
    ESB

Bizarrely, this name is used by two different breweries. This one is made by Run of the Mill, up in Maine. I'm only the fourth tick on this one, too.

I really didn't get this beer. Strong Ale or ESB, it didn't matter: it was a caramel bomb. Honestly, it seemed little different than SA Boston Lager or Winter Lager. As it warmed up, it gained some dry bitterness, but nothing to make it worth it. I'd skip this one.

    *

So there we have it: a zero-picture, but nonetheless fun, New Beer Sunday. A good time, some great football on the TV, and three new beers: one completely "meh," one solid and tasty, and one a revelation.

    Cheers, all!

So I looked through my beers to see if I could find one that I haven't tried that could also sway me from my scotch, and I found the perfect one. It's an ale brewed in Scotland, go figure! Why don't we just add some hops and coriander to the wort? And why don't we skip distilling it? Let's just throw it right in a fresh oak barrel after fermenting instead! The final product: Traquair Jacobite. I love scotch ales, and this one is superb!

Pours a deep ruby color with a tan head that dissipates as quickly as the head on a cola. Molasses and toffee are very strong on the nose, and I get the coriander as well as some oranges in the background. Taste is big, bold sweetness up front, and it is followed by a big, citrusy sweetness that goes the rest of the way down and leaves a lingering aftertaste of oranges. The beer is a big, slow sipper, but there is a noticeably decent amount of carbonation. I don't normally feel that syrupy beers should have a decent amount of carbonation normally, but I'll let this one slide.

Have a great week and be safe out there!
    Cheers!

So my cousin brought me a variety pack from Starr Hill Brewery, a 12-pack of four beers I'd never even heard of. Tried the stout and IPA over the last few days and thought they were solid. I just tried their amber lager, which isn't great, but not terrible. My review is here:

My excuses failed so I just put on a marathon of Girls and my wife forgot about the snow. Now I get to venture to the cellar and open not a new beer but a good one, bourbon county to continue the barrel aged theme of the night.
