I have two hand signed and numbered bottles of Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter. They were signed by Ralph Steadman. Haven't looked at the numbers lately but they are both numbered under 10. He only signed 100. If it makes a difference I think they were bottled in 2005.

    Just curious of they're value.

I doubt it. The value is in the liquid, not the bottle.

I thought he signed all of the bottles that came in the red box/tin? Isn't there some sort of photo that came with them, or was that what was signed instead of the bottles? Retail ~$100?

I agree that this is true for the vast majority of us.

I should clarify that I'm not looking to trade them. I bought them based on the money going to Hunter S Thompson Memorial and I love the guys art.

I have bottles 2 and 7 which are actually signed on the bottles not the photo in the red tin.

So, wait: You're not looking to trade them, but you started a thread asking for their trade value (I get this info from the thread title and an implication from the OP)...?

Wasn't sure what to put in the title. Guess I should have just asked about the value but I didn't want people on here to think I was looking to sell them.

I was just going through the cellar and forgot I had them so I thought I would ask.

Or maybe the title should have been asking about the value of hand signed bottles as collectibles or just worth the liquid in the bottle.

despite what it may seem from the trade forums, most of us actually don't really "collect" beer...we drink beer.

i have a few signed bottles (one is #1 from a release) and i look at those as real special treats to open. i am a label saver and an autographed label is a great keep-sake but mostly for the memory of getting the bottle signed and the special occasion that it was opened at.

not sure if you remember the "rare" upside KBS label that someone tried to trade for way more than a KBS would normally trade for, that one resulted in hilarity...these aren't baseball cards, you drink them, hopefully have a few laughs with some other BAs, write a quick review, and then piss out what was drank.

Yea as a fellow HST fan I'd be more interested in having the empty bottle (plus the other goodies that came in the set) than trying to trade for the beer inside of said signed bottle.

In general I don't think that it adds anything unless you find a given individual who really wants that signed bottle. Is a Todd Ashman signed PVW Eclipse going to trade for any more than a non signed bottle? I doubt it.

    Cheers!

yeah, i was going to say, they're probably more valuable to ralph steadman fans than beer traders. maybe you could find the two overlapping, but it's not very likely... people will put on their beer trader hat and say "wait a minute, i'm not so into BA gonzo imperial porter that i'll give up [whatever]." but if you don't want to hold on to them, you could possibly find someone who would buy the bottle afterward (shrug).

Like I said, I am NOT interested in trading them and the post really wasn't intended to be taken that way (although reading the title and the first message I posted I would have got that impression also).

I was more interested in what people thought about beer as collectables.

If someone was a big Ralph Steadman fan they might give up something good for it, couldn't guess at what exactly. Most people trade for the sole purpose of drinking something that piques their interest, and people aren't going crazy for aged BA Gonzo.
Beer as collectables? Not something I know much about, there are people who collect vintage beer cans and stuff, maybe one of those guys?
Maybe try the Beer Memorabilia forum.

Pretty sure I've seen at least two trade threads searching for these signed bottles specifically. One guy was desperately trying to land one as a birthday gift for a friend (?) Hopefully you can hook someone up down the road with a great collectible and they can hook you up with some great beer.

Just found this thread but as someone that is a huge BA and a HUGE Ralph Steadman and HST fan this is one bottle that has still not been open in my cellar and will continue to sit. The bottle to me is a piece of art and a cool thing to showcase. The original art is hangin in my kitchen next to my other Ralph Steadman painting. I guess I'm one of those people that looks at beer as art and for two of my favorite art types to collaborate is pretty cool to me. But it is true that the bottles signed by Ralph are most likely worth more to Ralph Steadman fans seeing how he actually is a world renown artist. But I will never sell mine. Nor would I suggest ever getting rid of yours which it sounds like you don't want to. CHEERS !!

I personally wouldn't give a sh*t who signed the beer, but that is just me.
