I really appreciate all the responses! Basically, we'll be doing a Broadway show and staying near Times Square on Saturday through Sunday. So I'd prefer to not venture TOO far away. We know Manhattan pretty well so anything within a reasonable walking distance would be perfect for some "after-theater beers".

Sheesh, I like how the Sheraton "Times Square" is actually about half a mile north of Times Square, but those are the breaks.

Nothing we've mentioned is particularly close to there, but Beer Authority should be doable.

Let me be the person who says to stay far, far away from Beer Authority. Total bros hangout, honestly the beer selections don't make up for the terrible crowd that frequents this place. Now that there are literally dozens upon dozens of great places in NYC, skip this place.

Beer Culture was a great call, and very close by is the Pony Bar Hell's Kitchen - http://hk.theponybar.com/ - great tap list, solid bottle list, and decent food

does anyone know if Barcade New York is open yet? Supposed to be on (I think) West 24th St, but the website says 'under construction'

I'll take it for granted that markgugs knows what he's talking about, as I've only been to Beer Authority around lunch time. Enjoying a flight of Kuhnhenn rarities at a huge, empty bar, with a pleasant bartendress was a thrill for me, but I've never been there after hours.

fair point, I hadn't considered a lunch visit - I've been during the day and it was as pleasant as you describe above. Just avoid this place like the plague post-4 PM

Brickyard Gastropub on 9th Ave btwn 52nd and 53rd is not too far from Times Square and worth checking out. I had a Founders KBS there after work today. You can check their draft list on beermenus.

these are all walking distance, easily:
    Rattle & Hum - E. 32nd St/5th Ave
    Gingerman NYC - E. 36th St/5th Ave
    Pony Bar Hell's Kitchen - W. 45th St/10th Ave
    Beer Culture - W. 45th St/betw. 8th & 9th Aves (also has a bottle shop w/ beers to take with you)

as for not having a car...count your blessings. first visit to NYC? the subway system is your friend. so learn it (or ask - most New Yorkers are a lot more helpful than they get credit for) and go visit:

Top Hops - Orchard St/Delancey (also has a bottle shop w/ beers to take with you)
Blind Tiger Ale House - Bleeker St

or head into Brooklyn and be amazed at how many good beer bars there are! btw I posted all bars...for bottle shops I think the best are in Brooklyn though the locals would know better than me
