Benchmark is good and there is a really new one Groundswell that is maybe 2 blocks away.

Thanks everybody for the informative responses. I've definitely re-arranged my brewery itinerary. I really would like to visit Alpine but I doubt the person who I am staying with is going to want to drive there unfortunately. I've been dieing to try their Nelson IPA. Definitely plan on visiting Societe. Never heard of them before. I've had a few AleSmith brews and was quite impressed so I will try to make it there as well.

I have one more question: I've had PTE twice before, but it was a long time ago. I plan on seeking out a few bottles of it while I am out there (and some other beers I can't get east). I've checked on Russian River's website and they list quite a few places where PTE is available for purchase in San Diego, but I am unsure if each of these places has PTE in stock at all times (I'm sure they don't). Has anyone seen it in any stores in the San Diego area within the past few days? I'll be out there tomorrow afternoon. My friend said he sees it quite often in Whole Foods near his place in La Jolla, but I'm still not sure he knows exactly what beer I am talking about.

I go to the La Jolla Whole Foods a couple times a week, and I haven’t seen PtE there in at least a year now. Good luck looking for bottles, but your better bet is to drink it on tap at Obriens or Toronado, where it’s almost always on.

You can also almost always find PtE on tap at the Stone in Escondido. Good luck finding bottles - my opinion is Sculpin, Societe IPAs, Alpine IPAs are just as good if not better than PtE.... if you can make an Alpine trek do it.

The one time I went to Stone Escondito they were out of Pliny on tap and in bottle. Lame
They were also out of some food and other beers we ordered.

I'm there probably more than Sage, and I've not seen Pliny there in close to two years, certainly not since they moved the beer area across the store.

OP's friend is either living in the past or confused.

Jesus, Alpine is like 25 minutes from downtown SD. Go out there, you'll be in town for a week. It's not that fucking far, and it's worth it. Don't take no for an answer or you'll kick yourself in the ass for the next 5 years.

Just as long as you don't try to go there after 3 PM on a weekday (rush hour traffic), the trip to Alpine from La Jolla is quite fast (I'm a barely over the speed limit driver, and usually make it around 35 minutes). Pretty much all freeway, and there are many, many route options (though I prefer 52-67-8).

It's my observation that a lot of people from La Jolla think that even driving downtown is too far.

I live in Santee and I think driving to Alpine is too far (although I ride my bike through Alpine almost every weekend).

Find a way to get to Alpine. You are flying across the country and will be in San Diego, make it happen. You will thank all who are pushing for it.

La Jollans would probably be more comfortable in Santee than OB.

because we can get alesmith in ny, nj, massachusetts, and pretty much any other state, but have never seen societe outside of san diego. alpine sends some stuff our way, but I've never seen most of their great beers (like nelson) out east.

I bought Pliny at Whole Foods La Jolla the week before Christmas. Had to ask an employee to get it from the back, but they had it. And the same employee told me they do get it semi-regularly. Blind Pig on the other hand, good luck.

Yeah, I know it is part of their back room "ask about it" stock. It has been a long while since they've had it on display, though.
