Got a tweet from Beer Merchants about 11pm today for Truman's London Keeper 1880 Double Export Stout at measely £17.95 a throw (and a big thumbs up reco from that beer dandy Pete Brown).
All gone now though. Not the first time this has happened. Same thing with Old Chimneys Good King Henry a few months ago. Could it be that UK good beer/craft/hipster drinkers are metamorphosing into an army of zombie Captain Ahabs at this very moment?

there are quite a few breweries who'd love the whole whale thing to take off here.

Ha. The fact that so many people were willing to part with £17.95 so quickly (750ml bottle or not ) is a worrying sign of what the modern UK beer drinker seems willing to accept. More Bruery/Lost Abbey type crap is likely on the way.

I could probably pay someone to brew it for me for less than that per bottle. I've got the recipe, so it wouldn't be a problem.

I see they've got the ABV wrong. My guess is that whoever looked at the brewing records didn't know where Truman put the racking gravity. It had a very high FG - around 1030 - for a beer with an OG in the low 1080's. It was mostly a little under 7% ABV.

Yeah but I'm sure the wax on the top and the signed labels definitely warrant an extra tenner on the price...

You boys are taking to this culture like a whale to a limited edition 1977 Ardbeg barrel aged triple hopped vanilla bean smoked Russian Imperial Stout.

    NO WAY!
As a sensible Northerner there is no way I'd pay over a fiver for a beer
    **Hides receipts & empties**

    But in all seriocity
you pays ya money and you makes ya choice
Importing, Bourbon/Champagne/Port Barrels, Gourmet coffee/chocolate/cocaine, ageing and small batches all cost money and it gives a certain amount of exclusivity.

What gets my goat more is Beers that fart higher than their arse
substandard half arsed bollocks cynically marketed to grab the attention of craft beer fans
and the extra cost representing nothing.

    To
The former. We can add yet another £10 to the per bottle price and it'll look more desirable on eBay. :grinning:

It'll be the Rate Beer guys buying them up: they can then share one bottle between them and smash the rest up to make the beer even rarer!

    <*))))))><

PS. I hate paying anything for a beer let alone over £3:00.

Disclaimer: most of the Rate Beer guys I've met are very, very friendly and will share their last drop of whatever they've got and certainly wouldn't stop anyone else from reviewing/rating a beer.

Truman's would need to start brewing beers people care about first. Magic Rock looked like they might be creating a hype monster with Un-human Canonball but that seemed to fizzle out once people actually tasted it. Does anybody care about the Abstrakt range?

Fyne are putting out fancy looking limited flip-top bombers but I don't see people going crazy buying them up. The bottle release of BA Sour Grapes didn't cause much fuss and that was a WBC gold medal winner and very limited. People do seem to be latching on to Moor Fusion as an annual release (750 bottles).

As I understand it Old Chimneys is a guy out in the middle of nowhere producing very small amounts of exceptional beer. So a bit of an exception.
