High Gravity Hurricanes are a bad thing. 2 of those in college and I was done for it.

I used to be a big fan of OE 800 & St. Ides. When we were broke in college in the mid/late 90s this was the way too go. Two 40s for $5 was a steal.

It was way more smooth than Corona. I remember being at an Italian resturant with a crap beer selection so I had a Corona and it wasnt smooth at all and I did not enjoy it. It never occured to me I would like a malt liquor beer better than a BMC type beer so I was surprised.

Memories of bringing backpacks full of Colt and OE to parties in college let me down a 40 or two when hanging with friends from school, otherwise they are gross and don't give me the buzz of most well brewed IIPA's or stouts.

I've had quite aloot of malt. It was my go to for about 2 years solid. From 19 to 21 it was my favorite flavor, oe, mickeys king cobra and st ides. Even still I could never drink steel reserve. Can't find myself to go back after finding hops tho

I'm sure you've already drunk plenty of Malt Liquor. All Beers and Ales are Malt Liquors.

Man, that stuff is all around the place around here, especially in the early to mid 90s. Crazy horse, OE, Colt 45, Mickeys, even Lowenbrau.

Another thing about the Malt Liquor segment? Television ads were often more entertain than those for more 'popular', Premium brands including the (in)famous series for Miller Lite. I mean, nothing says "FUN!" like watching Kool and the Gang and The Four Tops scatter as a bull busts through a wall. :sunglasses:

I'd take a good malt liquor over a bad craft beer any day.

Little gem in the land of AB :grinning: It just looks so enticing :stuck_out_tongue:
As for what was everywhere, mostly Country Club, king cobra, Mickey's, and Colt.

I had many a night where the Schlitz Malt Liquor Bull (blue) and I hung out. That is the supermodel of Malt Liquor. Colt 45 and OE are just plain skanks.

side comment some of your craft beers are actually malt liquors...its all about how they are brewed.

This ones still my favorite in the Malt Liquor category. Has some strong ale notes and a nice amount of bittering hops.

Between the ages of 18 and 20 I had to buy imported cheapo Danish 5.6-5.9% corn-adjunct lager beer. Ironically this type of beer was originally meant to be a premium product compared to the standard 4.6% Danish pilsner. Since tax policies starting in the 1920s benefitted the 4.6% abv pilsner, stronger beers became more expensive to make and sell. It was even called luxus öl (luxury beer).

Similar to the story of American malt liquor I believe, where initially it was sold as a more premium offering, but ended up being the cheapest option instead. I recall them being mild tasting and agreeable, even with the higher alcohol content. Similar to most adjunct lager beers I've had, whether AALs or southern European adjunct lagers, they all tend to be lighter tasting as a general rule.

In Sweden there's a segment of the macro lager beers which is 7.2-7.5% abv which emerged in the mid 90s after Sweden became a member of the EU and the previous 5.6% abv limit was abolished, every macro brand came out with their own version, and it has had a terrible reputation ever since. They didn't even bother creating new brands for these beers, they used their supposedly premium brands for these line-extensions, along with some budget brands. Some of these beers claim to be all-malt whilst others use sugar to increase the fermentables from the standard 5.2% Export lager. They usually have a slightly higher bitterness though, which makes them more balanced in flavor than they otherwise would be since they are also quite sweet, whereas the Danish adjunct strong lager beers have such a light malt taste to begin with that their low bitterness doesn't really make them unbalanced, only lacking in flavor.

Honestly I'm mildly surprised the OP and subsequent posts were received so well. In any event..

One malt liquor I can slug is Hurricane High Gravity. It's substantially better than others I've tasted. Its boozy and sweet, not half bad for something that smells like cleaning product or isopropyl alcohol. Couple 40oz bad boys from the shady Chinese noodle shop always put the gears in motion. They were more about thin black plastic bags over the standard brown paper version. This social lubricant tended to facilitate shit being thrown out of windows though. Hah, cheers.

Mickeys hand grenades always preceded fist fights and circle pits when I was growing up. Jeager has the same affect as well. Man this thread brings back some memories.
