    >>>>> New Winter IPA Sunday <<<<<

    Greetings All:

Checking with a winter White IPA called a"Accumulation" in a winter where we have had nothing in terms of accumulation. One of the driest winters on record in these parts.

Accumulation is not bad, kind of a light IPA if you ask me, with a distinct New Belgium bread flavor to it. Along with plenty of citrus flavors.

Today it's cloudy and breezy, but mild with temps in the low 40's. Not very winter like at all. It works for me. Next weekend I plan to brew a Bier de Mars, so let the spring begin.

    Happy Trails!

    New Saison/Farmhouse Ale Sunday

    Greetings NBS,

Looks like a busy day here on BA's finest forum. Good kick-off Matt.

Southern, CT was fairly mild today after a total washout yesterday. Today included fam time, chores, takin' down Christmas decorations, etc, etc.

Another NC brew for me today. Not sure I would put it strictly in the Saison style box, but a nice brew nonetheless:

    New Bear EVERYTHING Sunday!

Hi all! I've been dodging the WBAYDN thread, as I've been too lazy to post pics this week. However, I've been trying out new beers and new venues this entire weekend. For the sake of the thread title, I'll stick with Sunday, and give you some Saturday gouge after the break.

New Location: High 5's, New London
OK, grammatical error aside, this is a good spot. (Before you go thinking that this is a bar owned by the entity "High 5" and thus there is no error, allow me to assuage your doubts: they use apostrophes effusively and incorrectly.)

Good bar; about a dozen beers on tap, and all but one being craft. 3 Ommegang taps (Take the Black Stout, tripel, and BPA), and much more (in this thread, relevantly). A bunch of TVs, so this was a good place to watch my Niners (*ahem* Grey) take down the Panthers.

    New Beers!

    Otter Creek Black IPA
I didn't like this one. I know I'm against the grain here, but there was a minty or herbal flavor that I just did not like. The malts and hops were good, but that one flavor stuck out like a sore thumb. I guess they were trying to make it unique, and from that standpoint, they succeeded.

    Victory HopDevil
I know! Whoda thunkit, right? Well, this is an IPA I've seen bottled and always doubted the freshness, so I held off on the purchase. Heavy tropical fruitiness present in this one, and very tasty overall.

    Founders Red's Rye PA
Nice, very tasty IPA. Huge, huge dose of Amarillo hops lends an incredibly strong tropical fruit dose, without being a particularly bitter brew (for a hop head). I didn't get much rye, but this was my third IPA in a row, so....yeah.

    Brooklyn Monster Ale
2011 vintage on tap, for a beer that's no longer brewed? Sign me up, please! Very smooth and tasty barleywine. Not much hop presence forward, but that's to be expected. Man, barrel aging would make this yet another step better.

Well, that's it for Sunday. Wait, what's that? What about Saturday brews? Well, if you insist!

    * * *

Saturday I checked out a different new locale (since added to BA) in Mystic called the Engine Room. Decent selection, and I got to try out a new beer there on tap, Bahnhof Leipziger Gose. This was my first German Gose, and it was similar but different to a Belgian Gueze. Sour, but with more Pilsner-y lager flavors. Good stuff, but not quite worth the price.

    Dieu Du Ciel Aphrodite
This beer is marketed under two names; you will find it at BA under Aphrodisiaque. This was a very tasty breakfast stout, and I recommend it.

    Allagash Tiarna
Wow, this was the highlight of the weekend! It's listed (and named by Allagash) as a wild ale, but it really comes across as a good middle ground between a Belgian pale ale and a Brett Saison. Check the review out; it's super, super tasty. If you get the chance to grab a bottle of this, do so.

TODAY'S NEW BEER IS A BLEND OF 2 STANDARDS: Dales Pale Palm or Palm's Pale.

BLEND of Dales Pale Ale (88% BA, 99% RateBeer, 4.6 Smiga)+ Palm Speciale (76% BA, 26% Rate Beer, 3.5 Smiga) makes for a delicious blend closer to the Dales Pale Ale score.

Why don't we see more blends here on BA? Dont have a new beer on hand? Make one, by blending?
    Beer ex nihilo!

I am going to make and post more blends in the coming weeks.
Tonight, I take a sub-par light Belge and blend with my favorite APA.
The result is promising, a blend that to me is a 4+
The Dales has filled in all the spots where Palm was weak: Aroma strength, Bitterness, finish, finish length, tang/tingle. Body.
Yet the Palm has not pulled down Dales at all, in fact it's a sweeter, lighter, fruitier, more approachable as a blend.
What you guys think of blends?
So far, I am really liking black and tans because no stout gets worse (to my palate with a half-mix of good ale)
I am esp fond of Black & IPAs.
Now, in addition, I am discovering weak and timid mainstream beers (like Palm) are pulled up by a half-dose of a flavorful ale (like Dales).
If anything, the combo is so easy drinking, I am drinking it too fast, and ready to have another.

Great beer, Grey; I had a full bottle for the first time on Thursday. Kvelertak is very good, from the bits and pieces I've heard from them on Liquid Metal.

Re: Coolship, you might have been thinking about Allagash. Coolship is their wild/Labmic/Gueze series, available in-house only. I've had their Red (raspberries) and Resurgam (Gueze); I really, really liked the latter.

I don't think Maine Beer does that. They're about 15 minutes away from each other, though (and had a collaboration last year, simply called 2013 Ale).

    Cheers!

I just found a Pilsner by Marble Brewery in Albuquerque. This is a great beer, I think it'll have a permanent spot in my beer fridge, and at only 4.7% ABV it's very easy to drink.

Yep - you're right - Allagash has the coolship  - got my Maine breweries messed up! Thanks for the correction!

And hey, top-notch post and pics, man!
Tiarna went right onto my "wish list" - hope it makes an appearance down here!

Had a bunch of the Allagash wild ales recently. Probably can't get any Coolship unless you know someone who visited on bottle release days, but there's still Midnight Brett, Tiarna, FV 13, Interlude, et al. Interlude was new when I visited last month, and I picked up a bottle of it; fantastic stuff!

    Cheers bro!

One more new beer for Sunday. New Flanders Ale!

    First, two bits of background:
    1) Yesterday marked my 14 year anniversary on the job. Probably most people wouldn't notice that kind of thing, but in the service, you generally mark those occasions. 6 years until a pension, although I'm still planning on doing more; time flies!
    2) I've had a Rodenbach before, specifically the '09 vintage. Each year, as well as the Grand Cru, is considered a different beer on BA, so I'm going to go ahead and count this as an entry. Plus, it's a good beer to celebrate.

If you've had a Rodenbach before, you know what to expect. Shortie cork makes a first appearance in my house; beer was plenty carbonated, no issues here. (And it didn't shoot into the ceiling, unlike the Allagash Tiarna cork from yesterday!)

How does it pour, you might ask? Well, I'm not as skilled as Greywulfken et al, but I'll give it a shot. For you, the people. Because I'm a man of the people.

Pours super fizzy but still under control. Ultimately, it gave me plenty of room for a sizable pour.

So, on to the important question: how is it? It's fantastic, of course! "Complex" is a word that gets tossed around a lot, but another word that is equally important for Rodenbach brews is "delicate." There's so much going on in this beer, from sour wine notes to wild funk to dark fruit to oak to Volkswagen Beetle floor mats in Winter (I made that last one up). Yet, everything blends together so delicately and perfectly.

My first Rodenbach, I realized that this was what I was really looking for in wine. I honestly don't see much point in buying a Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon right now, if I can get Rodenbach fairly consistently.

If, by chance, you haven't had this type of beer before, consider yourself invited. Review below.

    New Local IPA Sunday

Beautiful day in NE Florida. We had some nasty storms yesterday evening which ushered in a crisp, clear, mild Sunday. I almost forgot that I got a growler of a new IPA (PJP) from one of my favorite local craft breweries, Aardwolf. Drank half of the growler (a quart, curse you Florida beer laws) while grilling beef kabobs, and finishing the remainder while the kids watch the Golden Globes (not my choice!). Nicely balanced and highly drinkable.

    New Smoked Porter Sunday:

Good evening all, and it's great to be back on one of my favorite threads. Had a beautiful day yesterday, reaching the low 70's and today wasn't too shabby either with temps in the low to mid 60's with some sun. Enjoyed all the football games this weekend, though the Saints loss was disappointing.

I tried a nice canned porter from my home state of RI that I picked up over the holidays. Didn't pick up a ton of smoke, which to me was a good thing. A nice sweet, every day porter here:

Happy New American Double / Imperial IPA Sunday!

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/345/104028/?ba=MadCat

Okay, so I a cheating a little, I had some of this yesterday. Local store has a growler filling station and will gladly fill a growler of this for $10, so I figured it was a good deal (this is normally in 4 packs right?) especially since I haven't seen bottles. This is a fantastic IPA, and an excellent way to cap of a fun but hectic day. Didn't even get to watch any football! I'm sitting here trying to get a few last things done in the day, and wishing we got more consistent weather here, or at least the weather picks something and sticks with it. Tuesday was 3 degrees and Saturday was 60. Just a good recipe for a migraine! But enough about weather, how do I neglect Victory so much? This beer is awesome, and it makes me want to find some Dirtwolf and pick that up as well. If you like citrus and pine in your IPAs, this is a good pickup for you.

Also, this is my first use of the Growler Saver cap that my mother in law got me for Christmas, and I can say it makes me much more comfortable buying growlers. Works as advertised, now I don't have to debate getting shitfaced or drinking semi flat beer. Better for the wallet, better for the tastebuds.

    Howdy NBSers!

Today was a great day for me. I went to my buddy's house to watch football and ate about 10,000 calories worth of bratwurst, crab legs, scallops, baked beans, and jalapeno poppers. In between the obnoxious amounts of food, I was able to split 2 bombers with my buddy, both of which were new (wow, it's like I planned that out or something:wink:). Here is my description of both:

    1) Bees in the Trappe by Grimm Artisanal Ales-

Poured a hazy golden color with a finger length white head that dissipates rather quickly into a cap and left minimal lacing. Honey and bready Belgian yeast were up front on the nose, but some pepper snuck through to make an appearance. The honey and yeast kick the peppery notes out once it makes an appearance on the tongue. Very yeasty on the tongue with light sweetness. The aftertaste is quite abrupt, and there is a very small amount of carbonation to this one. No alcohol makes an appearance anywhere, and it drinks a bit lighter than 8% would suggest.

    2) Old Jackalope Barleywine by Tenaya Creek

Poured a deep, hazy ruby color with a rich, creamy head that dissipated slowly into a cap and left a lot of lacing. Strong aromas of licorice, cranberries, white grapes, and big piney notes. Taste is bold and bitter, but there is a lot of candy like sweetness throughout. The aftertaste was of licorice coated in hop resin, and it sure did linger. No carbonation detected in this one, but it was slightly syrupy and on the bigger side. Alcohol is well hidden.

#1 was ok to me, but there are Tripels that are much more impressive to me. #2 was excellent, and I am going to recommend that anyone within the distribution area of this one grab a bomber of this ASAP. Now that I've done my part for this week, I'm going to catch up with your reviews now.

    Have a great week everyone!
    Cheers!

Busy New Beer Sunday for me today. It was New Virginia Beers today. Started off with O'Connor's Dismal Swamp Black IPA. It was very smooth, not too hoppy but with a good maltiness to keep it balanced. Next was Williamsburg Ale Werks Grand Illumination American Barleywine. It was fantastic. Very mellow for the style, with rich and complex flavors that did not overwhelm. Third, we had 3 Brother's Great Outdoors VA Pale Ale. It was good, but underwhelming. The final new VA beer today was Legend Brewing's Hopfest. Another disappointment from them. It does not live up to the name, and it had a lot of that residue on the bottom. I was expecting a bit of a hop bomb, but it lacked in aroma and flavor.

The new beer I had today that really did not disappoint me, Bourbon County Backyard Rye. Holy cow, so complex, tart and boozy. I cannot wait to find more of this!

Having a Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold for the first time, and it is excellent. One of the easiest drinking beers I have ever had, really simple and light but very tasty as well. Could easily throw down a 12 pack of these. Although it does have a sneaky-high ABV for the style at 5.8%, so a 12 pack would probably get you into some trouble

2012 Sierra Nevada Tumbler. I grabbed this for "shits & giggles." I thought $2 was worth seeing if a Fall beer from over a year ago would hold up. It's pretty good. Slightly flat, but the maltiness is still there without becoming one dimensional. If you can find one for 2 bucks, give it a shot.

PS Hope you all are warming up in the Midwest, and Northeast.

Whoa, opened up an Ale Asylum Madtown Nutbrown and it is fantastic! I am partial to brown ales, but this is easily in my top 3 along with NG Fat Squirrel and Surly Bender. It compares very favorably to Bender in appearance, aroma, and taste. Bender has just a little bit more of a coffee bite to it and has a more full flavor and mouthfeel, but this is excellent! It has a sweetness quality to it that I haven't really found in any other brown ale. Very pleasantly surprised by this brew, and am looking forward to having some more down the road.
