Is there a difference between Brewdog's Tokio* (with a red star) and Tokyo* (with a white star)? Because I can't seem to find the beer "Tokio*" anywhere on the site, so I'm assuming it's the same beer but with a name change. I just wanna make sure that I'm reviewing the right beer before I post my review

Where did you see the one with the letter "i"? I've always just seen them with the "y", so I'll be curious to see where you saw the one with the "i".

    California sells Tokio.

Tokyo/Tokio is not a product of Tokyo so I believe it is illegal to label it was such as it might confuse some one. This is the same reason Kentucky Breakfast Stout is now KBS and Canadian is CBS.

I had only seen the Tokio one before. It seems like the same beer to me.

What kzoobrew said. There are different ABV versions of Tokyo/Tokio though. It was originally called Tokyo here but as far as I'm aware it's only been exported to the US under the Tokio label.

Actually, it looks like both of those beers are the same ABV. I had the Tokio one and, if I remember correctly, when I looked it up here on BA a few months ago, both names led to the same beer. I could be mistaken on that last part, but I'm fairly positive it's the same beer.

Ok so looks like the general consensus is that it's the same beer. Thanks guys, that helped!
    Cheers!

The only thing that might make it a bit more confusing is that if you search you can find 12% versions of the beer. I think it just might be older batches like in 2008.

    http://www.brewdog.com/blog-article/8

    From that link:
"Tokyo is also the strongest beer we have ever made.
It is a 12% imperial stout brewed with jasmine and cranberries added in the kettle.
After fermentation we dry hop the beer with a combination of North American and New Zealand Hops.
Furthermore we then age this beer for 4 weeks on toasted vanilla French oak chips.
Only 2000 bottles were made in this initial preview batch."

From what I can deduce, it used to be 12% and named Tokyo. Eventually it was imported into the US as Tokio (for legal reasons) and the new version of both is 18.2%.

Because tickers gotta tick and Brewdog knows this and would make people buy double the bottles.

    Cheers!

Hello. I have never seen the one with the "i", and I have been drinking BrewDog for over two years. I guess you learn something everyday.

I have 3x Tokyo total, 1x Tokyo (red dot) and 2x Tokio (no dot). Hmm, never noticed that before. I actually had to go look at my collection.

    Nice marketing ploy...
