I open a 5 gallon bucket that was brewed about a year ago. Found this White bubbly looking stuff on the top. Is it bad to drink? It smells slightly like cider.

If you rack beneath the mold..and don't disturb the mold...and just say no to the mold...it just might could be OK.

Only way to know fer shur is to bottle...age...and sample.

I agree with Herb, it could be okay. But I'm curious, what style of beer is it?

Why did you have a beer in a bucket for a year? And with that much headspace?

Um, no I wouldn't drink that. And if you do and let others try it, don't show them this photo.

First forum post. I smell something, but it's not cider.

The beer is infected but probably not with the bacteria that would make it any good. Worth a taste I guess. I have the same questions as @mcc1654 though.

Some yeast strain start to produce that kind of stuff in very short time. meaning if it's smell like beer or white wine it's probably ok.
From the picture I assume there's not much beer left in this bucket, considering one to two inches of yeast on the bottom. I wouldn't bother.

Sure you didn't get your white buckets mixed up and that's not just dry dog food? :grimacing:

Strange as it may seem, not everyone who uses the internet is a nice, well-adjusted person with rational motives for what they do. Some are lonely, bored, twisted little freaks who have nothing better to do than post things that they hope will cause consternation. I think probably in their minds, this makes up for the lack of attention they receive in the real world.

Oh, trust me, I know well what the dregs of the interwebs hold. Just trying to speculate the reason in this case as most the time on this board a suspicious post is usually trying to sell us something (trolls are few and far between here… or I'm just missing them). Meh, suppose just wanting attention will have to do.

Sorry, hadnt checked post for a few days. I orignally brewed about 8 gallons of red ale. kegged 5 gallons of it a year ago. I forgot about it and the airlock dried up. So that made me not want to keg it. So it sat there for about a year until last sunday when I decided i wanted to do something with it.
Truly, it doesnt smell like puke. It smell slightly sweet, like cider.

Will the mold or what ever that stuff is have dangeous bactieria in it, or just bacteria that might make it taste bad, or could it be a sour red ale by now.

Arent sours aged for a year or so?

Tummy ache in the worst case I'd say, maybe regurgitation. Probably neither.
