What's weird about that beer is that it seems to vary in appearance quite a bit. I have pictures of it from 2 imported casks (separated by 1 year), 2-3 from imported bottles, and 2 shots (3 years apart) from the brewery in Bamberg. Almost none of them look like the same beer although the cask versions look closest to one another.
I think the sediment from the cask versions ends up settling out, so those are pretty clear. They were closer to a deep gold color. The bottles are VERY bright unless you swirl the sediment. Those are more of a copper color.
At the Mahr's brewery my pictures make it look slightly hazy and more of a khaki color last year. My pictures from 3 years ago show it to be closer to a hazy gold color.
Very odd...but still a beer I love to death.

A BIG +1 to what Domingo posted concerning Mahr’s Ungespundet-hefetrüb. I too have noticed that the beer can ‘vary’ in appearance but the fact that a beer is unfiltered does not necessarily mean that the beer has to be cloudy. All of my homebrewed beers are unfiltered and my only homebrewed beers that are cloudy are Wits and Hefeweizens.

The benefit of not filtering beer is that it doesn’t strip any flavors from the beer.

    Cheers!

I like Märzen and Dunkel equally and they make a very very yummy Dunkel.

If it was, I forgot and was overwhelmed by your bodacious love of Märzen.

I can give a tour and host a beer drinking session at Brauhaus Faust on February 15th or the 22nd. Which one works better for everyone? Would anyone be interested in going to the Brewery-owned tavern "Zum Riesen" afterwards for some dinner and additional beers?

If neither of these dates work for you, just send me a message and I'll arrange something that will work.

@herrburgess was going to be in town at some point but I forget when. Hopefully he'll chime in although I haven't seen him 'round these parts lately. I'm somewhat flexible with the date so long as I'm given a few weeks time to beg negotiate discuss with die Frau.

Can't be the 22nd of Feb.: that's the weekend of BrauKunstLive. I can do it in March or whenever. I like the offer of drinking in the brewery, but doesn't every tour do that? I enjoyed my first Auswanderer in the cellar where they sow the brewery video. The eats & drinks at Zum Riesen also sound like a great idea.

I can't do it on the 22nd, my wife's birthday. How about we wait a bit till spring or summer, so maybe the weather is nicer and after the brewery tour we can spend a nice evening outdoors? With December and January being really mild now, I expect winter to hit us hard in February and March.

Well I had a pleasant experience today at the beer store. I walked in for a pair of Spaten (to break up the dopplebock run I've been on lately)(sorry Stahlsturm) and discovered a Scheider Weisse Variety Pack with Free Fancy Pants Glass. Now ordinarily I'm not into Fancy Pants glasses, but it was a hard deal to pass up. A Fancy Pants glass plus seven beers for only €8,99. Considering that I saw one of those beers (Tap 5) for retail in Massachusettes recently for $10.00 :grimacing:, and I guess you could call this a Buy One Get Six Free deal. What a bargain! I'll post reviews here at some point.

The man at the counter said there was one and only one leftover from Christmas (when I was away) and this was the one. My box had "Herr Wolf" hand-written on the top, so either Herr Wolf is the operator of this particular store or he never showed up to claim his reserved box. Either way I win, I guess. Variety pack includes the impossible-to-find-in-Heidelberg Tap 1 (Mein Blondes), Tap 4 (Mein Grünes), Tap 5 (Hopfenweizen), Tap 6 (Aventinus) and Aventinus Eisbock, along with two not-so-hard-to-find Tap 7's.

I had to go and look up the price on the monopoly website for Tap 5 and it turns out it's 4,37USD, though you have to order a full case of 20 half liter bottles (if it was on the shelf it would probably be a bit cheaper, since there are no volume discounts from the retailer, but the distributer tends to lower the price when they get a beer on the shelf). When the price per bottle is more expensive than it is in Sweden, even if you have to ship it across the globe, then you know it's a rip off :stuck_out_tongue:.

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Have I ever mentioned that the Schneider in Kelheim is less than 20 miles from my house ? I never go there though because on the way I pass the Schneider in Essing (and the 2 breweries in Riedenburg...) and I always "get stuck" at one of them. I'm not a big Weizen drinker anyways which may be the real reason but a BA meeting in my area would probably include the Schneider in Kelheim as well.

We could have a rolling meeting. By that, I mean we could have a Saturday in Miltenberg, then a Sunday in Regensburg, with a brewery tour led by Stahly.

Alas, one day is not nearly enough for Regensburg, much less the treasures buried out in the country which I thought was supposed to show ?

This is the problem. Not all of us have a weekend plus to spare, as much as we'd all like to head out into the countryside for a few days of beer drinkin'.

I wrote about the Helles from Held-Bräu in this post a few weeks ago. Yesterday I was back at my Getränkemarkt and this time they had a few crates of the Altfränkisches Bauernbier (a Dunkles). I took a bottle and tasted it today.
I should have taken a crate I guess. It's really an outstanding Dunkles. Very dark color, huge and firm head, roasty and slightly burned aromas of malt. Very dry, not sweet at all unlike most Dunkles. And, best of all, a really good and refreshing note of bitter hops. I really liked this one. I would still classify it as a typical Dunkles from Franconia, but with its dryness and bitterness it's somehow headed towards a Schwarzbier.
