I'm currently on a long road trip, aka drinking my way across the country. At a pretty nice craft bar in Phoenix (Angel's Trumpet) they had this one listed as an "imperial lager" or something like that .... it was actually pretty good, and they were right that I would have passed on it if they called it malt liquor on the board: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/5316/46635/

It had little in common with what most people associate with malt liquor, or at least what I remember it tasting like almost 20 years ago.

Spent too many weekends in high school getting slobberknockered on such rat-gut. Schlitz Malt Liquor Red Bull was my poison of choice, but I’d drink anything that was cheap and got the job done.

I hope to never taste – and especially to never smell - another malt liquor for the rest of my life!

A few times in the last couple of years I've had a 40-oz Steel Reserve when I wanted a brew and money was tight. Honestly, it wasn't bad at all. At over 8%, it had a kick, but was surprisingly smooth. It had some flavor to it, too. Quite unexpected.

You certainly missed out on an interesting childhood. I think my first sip of alcohol was a Hurricane outside of The Killtime in Philly. Memories must increase the taste though...

As a matter of fact, I went on a cheap ass beer/malt liquor kick back in May or June, and if I'm not mistaken, I remember thinking that 211 wasn't all that bad tasting, pretty enjoyable in fact.

forties were the most significant source of caloric intake of one of my finest years to date, so I see no reason to hate on them.

I used to be able to buy two 40s of OE and a pack of Marlboros for five bucks in college. Those were the days...

I really don't understand this. American Malt Liquor is nothing more than a low-grade BCM product + extra corn to boost the ABV.

I used to drink a Schlitz malt liquor or a Colt 45 every now and then back in my Miller days, as this thread attests you won't die drinking BMC stuff. I don't like the high gravity stuff at all, that stuff is bad enough it just might off you, Steel Reserve tastes like it was made with anti freeze.

Crazy Horse was...crazy. Stopped drinking it when I heard it made you go sterile...after two kids, I guess I'm alright. I think I have one of the painted bottles around somewhere.

My days of drinking OE 40s go back to high school and maybe a little before that (yikes).... First thing I thought of reading this thread is ALL THE SHIT WE CHUCKED OUT OF WINDOWS!!!

    Don't give a 15 year old a 40 of OE shopkeeper, please!

I used to drink a fair amount of malt liquor back in my poor college days (and a few years after). If I have to be honest, here is my recollection of preference from best to worst: King Cobra, Mickey's, Colt 45, Schlitz, Steel Reserve, St. Ides, Olde English, Camo, Magnum

Related question: What's the most ridiculous drink you've made with a 40 of malt liquor? Example: Brass Monkey (half Colt 45 and half orange just).

The weirdest one I've had was 1/2-3/4 of a 40 filled with kiwi-lime Mad Dog. We called it a Crusty Gatorade, though one of my friends got so drunk off it that he asked where his "Dirty Sanchez drink" was when he couldn't find it.
