Just completely randomly found 2 bottles for sale at a store in NY for $24.95 each. I intend to drink one and trade one. Maybe you friendly BAers can help me with some questions:

    1. Cap says "14.03.15". Does that mean I should drink before March 14, 2015, or does it just need to be sold by then?

    2. What can I reasonably expect in a trade?

    3. I obviously want to save one to drink for a special occasion, but I have absolutely no way of cellaring; I live in a small NYC apartment. Should I just throw it in the fridge? Should I leave it in a dark closet at room temperature?

    Thanks, y'all!

Just drink one and send the other to me for a few Plinys.

Put it in a box under your house, that will cellar it:grinning: or trade it your choice .

No house. Apartment building. Balcony will be too cold in the winter...

As a fellow NYC apartment dweller, my beer cellar is a vinyl cooler that I keep in a closet that gets no sunlight. I live in a basement apartment and the temperature is always cool, even in summer. I've had good luck cellaring in there.

Also, out of curiosity, what was the store?

    1. According to the brewery's website: "The minimum sell-by date is stamped on the capsule." What I don't recall is whether it's stamped YY.MM.DD or DD.MM.YY. So either the 14 or 15 could be the year. I believe it's 3 years out from bottling though.
    2. About $24.95 worth of beer. Just drink it.
    3. I think your fridge is a better place for that beer than your closet.

Put your coat away, big guy. You think I didn't buy their last 2? I left work during lunch for my usual bottle shop trifecta - Top Hops, New Beer, and Whole Foods Bowery. Found the gems at New Beer just sitting there on the shelf. Picked up an Espresso Yeti at Whole Foods too.

Meanwhile, I've never shipped anything for trade, so I'm just doing this one in-person. Otherwise I might accept a Pliny offer.

I was going to guess New Beer or Eagle Provisions. If those beers could tell a story...

I showed the guy at Whole Foods, who saw the price sticker. He said Eagle gets them sometimes and sells the gift pack for $300. I guess that means I got a decent deal.

the date is DD.MM.YY, 3 years out eg 14.03.15 was bottled on the 14th of March 2012.

I think Westvleteren 12 is best after a couple of years, 3-5yrs is sublime. But if you have never had it I would of course drink one fresh, that bottle is going on 2 years now, so would taste great already.

Excellent, that is a very helpful reply. Assuming I drink it in the next month or two, should I throw it in the fridge, or leave it out?

Bullshit. They've just got a shady business practice. If theses bottles are blank, that means they are being sold black market against the wishes of the monks, and at a huge markup.

If they have the printed "XII" label on them, then they are broken up from the six pack "bricks" that were a onetime release in late 2012 to be sold for $84.99 http://beerpulse.com/2012/12/westvl...more-on-challenges-of-a-one-time-u-s-release/

I would put it in the fridge, when you drink it, pour it all in to a glass and enjoy it slowly over about 30mins-hour and see how it changes as it warms.

    enjoy!

    cheers

I'm sure you are correct, but what else should I have done? Give them a lecture? I should probably drain pour one as a show of solidarity.

Ironically I have wanted to taste Westy 12 and was only able to get a sip at Darkness Day. The other day I found a bottle for $25 as well. This was the one marked "XII." Was it a great deal? Maybe not. Was it the cheapest way I was going to get one? I think so. Was I happy as hell to find the bottle? Very!!!

I would save them both. They don't just pop up everyday at least around here. Drink one now and give the other a year or two in the fridge and drink it then.

Agreed. I had the opportunity to do a fresh and 3 year side by side, the 3 year was light years ahead of the fresh IMO.

Bury the box in a secret place in the woods or something wouldn't let it go tho.
