I just recently purchased a keggerator and I'm loving it! The only problem I'm having is choosing the next beer for the keg. I guess there are worse problems to have. Anyway My first keg was Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA, then my next was Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale. I want something that can be a good session beer, because I'm obviously going to have a lot of it. I'd appreciate any recommendations! Thanks!
I agree that session beers are nice in keg quantities (I'm assuming half barrels. A sixth barrel is a differen story). As much as I love a 90 Minute IPA, for example, a half barrel is an awful lot of it. Since you apparently like IPAs, I would suggest something like Founders All Day IPA. A surprisingly nice hit of citrus, but, at 4.7% ABV, it's an easy drinker.
The Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale is not bad stuff. I have some of the Torpedos' and they are considerably hoppier. Holy moly, I wouldn't want a full keg of Torpedo. If you want to experiment, it might help to buy the bottled version 1st.
Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm going to try to get the Founders and if not I'm gonna go with Stone.
You need to get duel taps like me so you can have two sixtels or a sixtel and a quarter. I currently have NoDa Hop Drop 'n Roll and Founders Breakfast Stout. Happy times! I guess it all depends on where you live. No state listed
Oh yea sorry, I live in New Jersey. Also I was considering getting dual taps, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to finish both kegs before they go bad haha.
What size kegs are you buying? If sixtels or tall quarters, dual taps is a great idea. If you loved the Celebration, SN just released Ruthless Rye which is another fantastic hoppy seasonal from them. Great beer, I'll be buying one of those myself again this year.
I've had Ruthless on tap three times, twice back-to-back two years ago and once last year. Very good, although I think the 2012 was better.
I usually get sixtels, but I am afraid they'll go bad. How long would you say a sixtel will last before it goes bad? I usually try to finish them within 3 weeks and I don't think I would finish two in 3 weeks.
If you can get Nugget Nectar, do it. I tried last year, but the distributor (Hunterdon Brewing Co) would only sell those to bars and restaurants. I would also try to get a SN Celebration sixtel (if they are still around) or Ruthless. I got a Ruthless sixtel 2 years ago and it was awesome. BTW, Torpedo only available in half kegs in North Jersey.
Torpedo in sixtels here in PA. And yes, Nugget Nectar is an awesome keg,I get one to two a year. Tremendous, beyond words.
