More Darkness than ever before was released in the state this year. Over 25,000 bottles made it to Darkness day and to distro. And now, we're getting another 5,000ish from the recent batch and you're complaining? If you love Darkness so much, and want it so badly, go to Darkness day. If you're complaining about getting shut out at Darkness day, show up earlier. I saw people walking in at 8am and getting wristbands this year.

Don't bitch about one of our favorite local breweries growing up and expanding though. That's just foolish, and even more so, selfish. We wouldn't be able to go to the store and get many of the beers we do if other breweries hadn't done the exact same thing. Surly will always take care of MN first and foremost, and to think otherwise means you haven't paid attention to what they've done already. So what if they're serving Chicago again, remember they were already there and pulled out so they could take care of us! Surly makes great beer, and they deserve to grow and be successful because of that.

Amen. I find it amusing that the same folks bitching about Surly expanding also bitch about not getting enough BCBS, KBS, Founders Backstage beers, etc. I wonder what the folks in Michigan and Chicago think about their local breweries shipping beers all over the country.

I've gotta admit, when someone posted this batch is 10,000 bottles, 8,500 of which are going to Chicago I thought it would be another all out cat fight to pick up a bottle. That doesn't seem to be the case though(I also have no clue what the actual bottle count numbers are). Golden Valley Liquor Barrel posted they got Darkness at like 1 or 2pm yesterday and I swung by there after leaving work at my normal time (6pm) and there was still plenty of Darkness to go along with a mountain of Hopslam.

Yes there is Darkness Day, and I always attend it, but it's nice for those who didn't have the time to go or those who'd like another bottle to pick some up without fighting for it. It felt great to grab a bottle with no line, no hassle and not having to ask the guy at the counter if they had any left.

I have no issues with them expanding and distributing to other states, that's good for them and will also be good for us. I'm sure they'll have a lot more cash to experiment with making other brews. With all that being said, it doesn't seem like the folks at New Glarus are struggling for money. From what I recall they brew 4 times the amount as Surly and distribute only within their state lines. The locals walk into their corner grocery store and pick up as much of whatever they want without being called out as a selfish hoarder, including the limited releases.

There are different models to go by and honestly it doesn't really matter as long as we get to drink good beer. I commend Surly for what they've done for our state and New Glarus for what they do for WI.

    Cheers!

Zips posted they have Darkness, 1 bottle limit. $20 or $21. Can't tell in the photo.

    Edit: Also Hopslam, $62 case

    You have a short memory...
I used that term after you were whining about the guy with the soda drinking girlfriend at Indeed, because they walked out with their limits of Rum King.

    Remember now?
    You feeling entitled today too...brah?

You'd have to work hard to make me mad, kid. Sorry, I know "kid" is used a lot, too. Oh, and "hard". Plus "make". Man, I don't even know what to type.

As others noted, anybody who REALLY WANTED DARKNESS had ample opportunity. You want to show up at the last minute & get whatever, however much you want? Sorry, broheimaster, that's not how the nutty world of in-demand beer works anymore. Time for an expectation adjustment.

I have to agree with this. I missed Darkness Day this year. I did not take a day off of work to hunt when it went out to stores, I just went to my local bottle shops around 5:00 the day it dropped and went home with the number of bottles I wanted.

Yeah, it helped that I was informed and knew the day it was hitting shelves, but anyone that is chasing Darkness should do their due diligence and be informed. Surly Tweets, liquor store FB pages, and BA forums make it almost impossible to not know when something is dropping.

You guys are missing the point. Get one or two bottles= easy. Getting a whole case or more to hoard/use as trade bait= Surly is a bunch of dicks.

Personally, I'm just not willing to drop $20/bottle of beer anymore.

First it's Fulton and your boot from the tap room and now Surly. Who is next on your ban list? Won't be long all you will be left with is BMC...
Maybe time to relax a little.

Have at it. I used to chase it down too, but came to the realization that it's just beer and there is plenty of other stuff out there that is more readily available and affordable. That's why it's funny to hear people who probably have a dozen bottles in their cellar bitch about not being able to find more.

Yah maybe I'm being a little dumb about this. I guess I'm glad for Surly and if it makes you feel any better I bought a bottle of Patience yesterday as I thought my taste buds might not have been working well that night.
