There are dozens or maybe hundreds of over-sexed IPAs that are the perfect flavoring for malt liquors. When you splash the King Cobra goodness into the Solo cup, slurp the foam first, and then top it off with a nice dose of Tongue Buckler or HopSauce, or your favorite local IPA. Makes for a most excellent budget cocktail.

Love the name. Voodoo is a stop on the Underground Railroad, I take it.

I kind of thought these went away, what with the craft explosion. Back in the olden days that expression meant over ~5% my how times have changed :sunglasses:

I had forgotten about King Cobra. Mickey's and Schlitz tall's were our go to beer in high school. Old English was the stuff we bought when we wanted good malt liquor. Ah, the memories of cutting English class in senior year and pounding three or four Mickey's and returning for physics class. Fortunately, we had already been accepted to college!

Oh I am sure there are still some shelf turds of it floating around... it would be ollllld at this point.

Dont get confused though cause they have another beer of the same name which is now a black ale, so dont get confused.

The bottle should say malt liquor on it, and I think the lettering is also a deeper shade of brown.

On another note being a dfh fan they made A "Liquor de malt" brew, which was even sold in a paper bag!

As a Chicago kid that was weened on Old Style and going to college in the rockies I stumbled :grinning: upon Mickeys as it was produced by G Heileman Brewing so I thought it might be close to Old Style. Taste brought me home and the abv took me away. I still like higher  abv craft beers but haven't had a Malt liquor in quite some time

Remember drinking some Mickeys back when I first joined the Military, was hanging out with a lot of people from PA & Ohio. I remember drinking some High gravity canned stuff from Tennents when I was stationed on England, horrid stuff, I guess that was a Euro Strong Lager. Fast forward to the Mid 90s, Osan AB South Korea; Schlitz Malt Liquor or Heineken are the best choices to drink on base, so I partaked. Luckily my homebrew kits showed up a month or 2 later via the postal system & I was saved...

I would still take a Malt Liquor over most BMC choice today, luckily I don't have to go there!

I guess most of the times I've been in Philly I was either driving (and not paying that much attn to billboards) or I wasn't in ghetto enough areas to where the target audiences for malt liquor ads were present in the densities needed to advertise effectively.... :stuck_out_tongue:

And although Kansas does have some very fine breweries (boulevard and tallgrass come to mind), from having spent considerable time there (largely on fort riley) I would think that even malt liquor wouldn't be strong enough....

Never had Samichlaus, and gotta say I'm not too enticed to try it :stuck_out_tongue:

I'm ashamed about the story behind that picture..I drank those 7 over an entire day (~10a-8p) out in the sun in 100*F. Drank about a gallon of water too, but still.. a little disgusting

Was it Private Stock that used to have the puzzles under the cap? Anyone else remember this? Must have been 25 years since I've had one....wondering If they still do this? If I remember correctly the puzzles were more enjoyable than the beer!

Please enilghten me. Of course, ALL beer is malt liquor . Why are only some beers described as such whereas others are simply termed Pale Ales or Porters etc? Is there some sort of crazy legal category definition which separates them, like the Texan view that beers over a certain strength miraculously become ales? Does the government think that some beers aren't made of malt or what?

I'm pushing 30, and I've never had malt liquor. Never even considered it until a couple years ago, when I started a new job with a colleague from MD who kept talking up Natty Boh (which was apparently the go-to drink there, but not even sold where I lived). Thought I'd at least give it a try, but we never had the time to make it happen.

Honestly, I'll probably never try any. It just seems like something that people either drink when they're in college and want to get wasted, or they're out of college and want to feel like they're at a frat party again. I didn't drink during school, so that rules out the nostalgia act. And there are too many other good things out there to enjoy. If I want a so-so drink on the cheap, I'll support my neighbors and buy some Genny.
