To a non hophead like myself, who has only begun exploring some IPA's, what is the difference between these two, other than the use of american and new zealand hops? Is the flavor profiles that different to really differentiate the two?

*edit. And yes I realize these are lagers, not ales.

They're both Double IPLs and, yes, the main difference is the hops that are used. The flavor profile really is that different between the two different hop varieties. Aside from the flavor profile, Kiwi is slightly higher ABV than Mass Rising (8.5% vs 8%).

Here you go this should help,

    Kiwi Rising: OG 19.5 / IBUs 105 / ABV. 8.5% (November Release)

Mass Rising: OG 17.5 Plato / IBUs 100 / ABV 8% (December Release, now year round)

That helps with information, but I was really looking for a taste difference, if any. One being more fruity or citrusy, or piney and earthy. Thank you.

I found kiwi to have more of a dankness, and also more prevalent fruity notes than Mass Rising. I found the mouth feel to be thicker, the carbonation to be more appropriate and found KR to be a better beer overall.

I thought they were both very good this year but actually preferred Mass Rising.

I just did a side-by-side of these last weekend, and I found Kiwi to be fruitier and hand a comparatively shorter/dryer finish. Mass rising had a... stickier finish.

I actually find Mass Rising to be fruitier and juicier along the lines of melon, papaya….

Kiwi Rising gives me more lemon, lime, and dankness.

Both very tasty, but I prefer Mass Rising.

Kiwi Rising tastes a little more awesome than Mass Rising.

Kiwi Rising > Mass Rising (though both are PHENOMENAL). Something about the IPAs/PAs that JA makes just tickles my fancy.

For me, the Mass Rising gets the slight edge overall - That said, the New Zealand hops in Kiwi stand out... Not that they're better/worse, or more citrusy/dry, but just that these hops hit you immediately because the Hop mix is clearly different compared your other JA beers and even most other east/west-coast IPAs, etc.

Wouldn't go so far as to call it "unique", but for me it's immediately clear with the Kiwi Rising that while they've stayed within their IPL style, that its definitely something different from Hoponius, or Mass Rising, or ABCs, etc etc.

kiwi rising tastes more hoppier with an onion/nutty flavor than mass rising, but mass rising has more sulfur in it

I thought Kiwi was better with freshness being equal and MR better when Kiwi was 6 weeks old and MR was two. Now that MR is 6 weeks old, it has flip-flopped back to Kiwi being better. Bottles anyway - the draft MR I had at JA brewery on Saturday was in much better shape.

I slightly prefer Kiwi to Mass Rising. I find that the more tropical and upfront hop presence just makes it a tad bit more interesting.

I prefer Mass Rising to Kiwi Rising, all based around the flavor profile. I thought that Kiwi's flavor was more tropical and a little more one-dimensional, and that Mass had a more discernible bready/biscuit malt character to it. The hop profile still dominates in Mass, but I think it's a bit more in balance than Kiwi. I also prefer the aroma, which is phenomenal.

However, I haven't been a huge fan of the few beers that I've had with New Zealand (Motueka specifically) hops, so keep that in mind while considering my opinion.

If I had to choose, I would also say that I prefer Mass over Kiwi. However, if you're you're looking for more of a citrusy/tropical hop flavor go with the Kiwi.

They're both good, but preferred the Mass due to the flavor profile.
