In general most of us mean stuff that comes in 40's.

This article from BA splains a lot

Guess the bros weren't worried about offending anyone with this article (from pp3, the more relevant part to the style is in pp1):

As white trash I am highly offended by being referred to as white trash!

Ah just kidding of course! I'm not white trash, I'm an edumacated man. I'm taking calculus III. So I can't be white trash anymore, right mom? :grinning: (yes of course dear. After all, we live in a double-wide now)

Yes, pockets of "big beer" are lined whenever you buy any of their products. And yes, big beer will stoop to just about any low when it comes to advertising campaigns. I'm sure there are some neighborhoods where malt liquors have had a bad impact. But the niche would just be filled by someone else selling something else if malt liquor didn't exist. The UK has similar problems with some sort of alcohol that's cheap (can't remember what it is, perhaps cheep gin?), and I highly doubt that malt liquors from BMC are readily available there. Bottom line is that if people want to get drunk from cheap booze, they will find a way. And as a general rule, the bigger the company, the lower they'll go when it comes to advertising and business tactics.

I probably already mentioned it, but it's worth mentioning again. Full Sail's malt liquor is the bomb. It's cheep for craft beer (just under four bucks for a bomber) and it's very delicious. I pick one up every time I go to Gabriel's superstore.

BTW if DFH releases a new batch of their malt liquor, somebody beer-mail me so I can get a trade going! :sunglasses:

And tho they don't sell malt liquor, MY pockets are lined whenever you buy anything from Sam Adams, since I own (a few share of) their stock. So feel free to buy Sam Adams. I'll email the production dept and see if I can get some malt liquor going for you guys...

I like a Steel Reserve or a Dogbite high gravity from time to time. It reminds me where I started. I went from ashy to nasty to classy.

That's plain wrong. "Liquor" in the alcoholic beverage industry refers to a distilled product. "Malt liquor" is a misnomer. "Malt liquor" is not a term to describe all alcoholic drinks made from fermented liquid malt; the term that means exactly that is "beer." Therefore, a malt liquor is a style of beer, and not the other way around.

We used to drink Mickey's in high school...I'd be curious to try it again (hey, it ranks #18 on the American malt liquor charts!).

http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/231/43401/ The Peoples Pint in Greenfield Massachusetts has a malt liquor that they actually sold in 40 oz bottles. I'm not sure if they still make it. Definitely the most expensive 40 I've ever seen.

I drank malt liquor in high school but in college the Smart & Final near campus sold 12pkc Old Milwaukee Ice for $2.50. When I really wanted to get faded Id add a bottle of Night Train!

In the US, in the pre-Prohibition era both the industry and the Feds referred to all beers (lager, ale, porter, stout, weiss) as "malt liquor". For Federal regulations and laws, wines were called "vinous liquors" and distilled beverages were "spirituous liquors". After Repeal, the Feds used (and still use) the catch-all term "malt beverages" (which includes even non-alcoholic beers) but many states laws continue to use the term "Malt Liquor" for all beers. Most law dictionaries will still have those definitions.

Today, the industry does use the term "malt liquor" for some higher alcoholic beers, and in some states some beers overs a certain ABV by law had to be labeled "malt liquor". Texas was once the most notable, but they have since changed their laws. Previously, any "malt beverage" over 4% ABV (5% ABV) in Texas was taxed at a slightly higher rate and had to be labeled either "ale" or "malt liquor". (Definition still on the TABC website). Thus the familiar "Ale in Texas" phrase that once graced many US lager beer labels.

Liquor in the brewing sense is just water. In the colloquial sense it often refers to spirits but in legal documents it is generally used to denote any alcoholic beverage.

Interesting. I guess I'm just (vaguely) familar with Ohio law, where they list "spiritous liquor," "intoxicating liquor," and "liquor," but they also list "beer" and "wine" with the usual definitions (and specify that "beer" is not a "liquor"): http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/4301.01. I didn't realize "malt liquor" was so commonly used to refer to all beer in other states.

Sure, but "liquor" in any process indicates a liquid product; using that same logic, you can call tea a "liquor." Legal definitions aside, I feel it's still safe to say that the appropriate meaning "liquor" is a distilled alcoholic beverage. It makes equally as little sense these days to call all beer "malt liquor" as it does to call wine "vinous liquor."

Couldn't get 40's in SC when I was in High School, so we had to drink quarts of OE and Hurricane, and don't even get me started on some St. Ides Special Brew!

Never heard of Edward 40 Hands before this thread. It must of come around after my young days.

I liked Mickey's and Colt 45. Never really a drink of choice in my group. Probably have not drunk one in 20 years.

I love Colt 45 when the budget is low. Tastes good for malt, and lets me get my Billy Dee on. Olde English 800 is another favorite on occasion, and I even ride the Bull on ******* days, so Schilitz Malt Liquor's a favorite. And yet, I love the best Micros and Import beers so a true BA. So, I can handle the true full range of human emotion.

Over every pub door is a sign like
" JOE SMITH. LICENSED TO SELL BY RETAIL ALL INTOXICATING LIQUOR FOR CONSUMPTION EITHER ON OR OFF THE PREMISES"
Spirits are generally known as hard liquor.
Although it appears to make little sense to call wine "vinous liquor" that's because nowadays we're lazy and don't use two words where one will do.It doesn't stop the expression from being correct. And all beer is malt liquor whether the term is used or not.The patchy use of the term in the US seems to derive from badly worded legislation.

Hung out in the early 80s with a friend who "drank so much in the navy he couldn't get a buzz off beer" who introduced me to Schlitz Bulls and the joy of fishing while drunk. Good times.

Came across a Canadian malt liquor called Iron Horse that I thought was pretty good (also in the 80s); luckily my taste buds have evolved greatly since then.

The very first was Schlitz tall boys, tasted pretty good back in the 70's in the woods or by the Chattahoochee river. 10 years ago before the craft craze I admittingly drank the big black can steel reserve triple and Hurricane only for you know a quick buzzzzzz!

When I was in high school mickey's big mouth was the drink of choice. It was cheap and did the job. But it was awful. Mostly because it was usually warm!

After four pages I'm now seriously debating whether 8 am on my day off is too early to buy a 40. This thread has me jonesing for a colt.

Screw it, I can always go the Brass Monkey route and use the orange juice as a breakfast excuse.
