Hey, my wife and I are going to be snowmobiling in the Gaylord area Valentine's Day weekend. Anything special going on at Shorts? My wife is a huge fan, so we're planning on an evening there for sure. Anything else in the area a must-do?

Just a great time there all around, you won't be disappointed. If you're into skiing or snowboarding, Shush Mtn and Shanty Creek are right there in Bellaire and worth going to. Other than that, nothing else to do in the area until summertime on Torch lake.

Petoskey Brewing is pretty solid but it's a little further away. Also, Traverse City is online ~30 minutes from Short's and Right Brain, 7 Monks, North Peak are great. Haven't had the new ones yet Filling Station, Terra Firma, and Bravo Zulu to name a few.

    I live in Petoskey.
Head to Traverse City for good beer.

I've been to Beards twice and that was *two* many times. The best beer was average at best. I like that it's a small place trying to make it but it just isn't happening. Go to Traverse City.

I feel you'll have a great time at Short's. There's no place like it, for sure.

If you venture northward, please stop in at Beards. I personally know those guys and have to say, they are extremely passionate about their brewery. They didn't have tons of financial backers or trust funds to get started. They worked very hard to get where they are today.

Brewery Terra Firma is, without a doubt, the best beer in TC area. About a mile from the big mall there, on a little farm. Shorts is always solid - good food & people. Have fun!

So what we have established is no one agrees on anything except for Shorts being good.

I always say just go try news places. Won't know for yourself unless you've been.

Nope. Only go to places everyone likes, and that leaves shorts.

We're going to Shorts one night, and North Peak/Right Brain another. Maybe hit another in TC, not sure. Too many to visit in one weekend, looks like.

If you are going to be in the Gaylord area then Big Buck is always worth a visit too. Their menu beers are decent (I like the Red Ale and Doc's ESB) but their Gourmet Seasonals are very special (and pricey).

I can second this. Peter and Ben are great guys and are very passionate about what they are doing in the local community of Petoskey. They make it a fun place, the beer is solid, and I always meet new interesting people when I'm there. When you have a hard time brewing enough beer, that at least says something about your beer and your supporting customers.

You'll like it. I enjoyed all of the beers that I tried, and felt that they were above average.

They acquired the recipes from Traverse Brewing Co after they went under. Jack from TBC now works for Short's and was one of Joe's employers back in the day. He's a cool dude. John from Terra Firma also used to work for TBC. Sorry if you knew that already, I think it's interesting.
