Just wanted to make sure I am correct in this. Starsan is drinkable and in smallish quantities will not effect flavor, correct? I didn't dump the 1/2 gallon of Starsan from my Better Bottle on Saturday before racking my Gumballhead clone into it. The gravity dropped by 5 points (added sugar to boost the OG back up again). I realize that had I used Iodophor this would be detrimental, but Starsan is fine, right? Just wanted to check and get your thoughts, and probably a good raz or 2. Tastes fine and fermented down to 1.011 already (pre sugar). Thanks.
you sir, are A OK edit: honestly, you are fine. No flavor, and if anything it provides nutrient to the yeasties too edit two: wow thats a lot of starsan in your beer hahaha, still will be OK
Perfectly safe. Your beer will be a tad bit more dry since you raised the OG with sugar, but it should still taste fine.
Everything ive read says that you will be fine. But just to be safe give the first 6 beers to someone you dont like very much. lol
Don't make a habit out of it...but you should be OK...especially if you've already pulled a hydrometer reading of 1.011 The yeast nutrient effect is a result of all the dead yeast cells...way to cull the herd! : )
^Hahaha, I was gonna say. Poor Yeasts! I reckon if sensitive sacc an handle it, so can your hearty liver.
I'm pretty sure this is not dangerous in any way, but I would imagine it doesn't do the beer any good. I want to ask a favor: will you post on this after you have a chance to taste the beer? I'd be curious to hear what kind of effect it had.
Wait, you guys are saying that a 1/2 gallon of StarSan solution in your beer wont harm you or affect the beer?! Geez, and I get worried about leaving too much foam.
Of course it will affect it. It will change the gravity, the pH, and the flavor (due to dilution). But it may not 'ruin' the beer, which is what I think everyone was saying.
I guess I'll be the one to make the obligatory post. Your beer is ruined, please send it to me for proper disposal
If you check out the active ingredient in Star San and then look at the back of a can of soda you will notice that they share a common ingredient, Phosphoric Acid. As long as it is diluted enough your beer should be just as safe as a can of soda.
Thanks for all the reassurance. Just wanted to check. I will update in a few weeks on how it turns out after I dry hop it and let it carb up. Thanks again.
I've accidently racked 5 gallons of a brown ale onto .5-1 gallons of starsan. Didn't realize it until halfway through and just said 'screw it' as I didn't want to waste all that work. Tasted great, scored a 38/50 at a competition!
I protest! You didn't properly list your ingredients, and had it in the wrong category!! It should have been listed as category 99Z, extreme screw ups that you drank anyway!!
This happened to me once by accident. I had a blow-off set up with the blow-off tube sitting in about half a gallon of starsan. Stupid me, I began cold crashing the beer and of course due to temperature/pressure changes the carboy sucked up about 2-3 pints of starsan. I panicked and tried to scoop some of it off the surface of the beer by using a turkey baster. That didn't work too well. Long story short, the beer tasted fine. Maybe a bit watery and dry but still fine. It was an oatmeal stout if I remember correctly.
I had the same thing happen, but instead of Starsan I had the end of the blowoff tube sitting in a beaker of cuervo (Was given a handle of it and sure as hell didn't want to drink it). Needless to say, my bavarian wheat beer did not cover up the wonderful aroma and taste of cuervo in the finished product...
