What's your favorite doppelbock and why?

I recently had a Jack's Abby Saxonator. Pretty good stuff.

Korbinian is always a go to DB as well.

I really enjoy the dark fruit and raisiny flavor of both these beers.

 

Troegs Troegenator is pretty decent.

Recently tried two dopplebocks from Schloss Eggenberg. The Ur Bock and the Samichalus. Both were excellent. For a more local favorite Troegs Troegenator.

 

We just got Andechs in NJ! I picked it up as soon as I saw it, and I recommend everybody do the same when you see it. It is flawless.

I've also been drinking a lot of Hirsch this past year, due to a good fresh supply near me. That one may be in my top 3- amazing nose and construction.

Eggenberg is legit for sure.

I also did get the Troegenator at the same time I bought the Andechs. I liked it better than I used to, and it does seem like they've made improvements. However, it's still not in the same league as the best German examples ( it did have some stiff competition this past weekend, too, and came out of it fairly well I'd say ).

 

Capital Dark Dopplebock. Unfortunetly, it is a seasonal and hasn't been out in a while and I am not sure when it will be out again. Closest American dopple to a German I have tasted.

I'm still a big fan of Spaten Optimator as well.

 

Sun King's Afternoon Delight is amazing, by far my favorite. Other than that Great Lakes Dopplerock is really well done.

 

I very much enjoyed Smuttynose S'muttonator.

 

Andechs. Why, if you have ever had it at the monastery while overlooking the countryside, you know why.

 

Agreed completely. Andechs Dopplebock is just amazing. Probably my favorite take on the style.

 

I'm impressed when a U.S. example hits the right notes (which I believe the Troegenator does). Still, I'd agree that that's about all it does -- and, as such, lands it somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd tiers of the better/best German Doppelbocks.

As to my favorite, probably Schlenkerla Eiche. Why? Because it is pretty much perfect(?)

 

The one from Kloster Andechs is my fave, too. The setting helps (although on my last trip it smelled like a barnyard), but it's phenomenal even from the bottle.
To me it tastes like chocolate covered raisins. Some doppels taste like caramel, and some taste a little like cocoa or maple. The Andechs version has all of those flavors at once.
Korbinian and Celebrator aren't far behind. Until Andechs is easier to get, they make a fine replacement.
Ditto with Ettal. Doppel-Hirsch is good, too.
While common (and cheaper), Optimator is still excellent.

Here in the states the only good ones I've had are New Glarus' Uff-Da and Prost's Doppelbock (which is/was based on the Andechser).

 

I really enjoyed my Barrel Aged Human Blockhead. It is sweet, but oh so good. Unexpectedly impressed when I had it.

 

After reading this description I must find this beer :-).

 

They're distributing it bit by bit in the US. I know you can find the Andechs Vollbier Hell on draft in Boston, so you're not far from one of their test markets.

 

I know it's considered, technically, a Weizenbock, but Schneider Aventinus every day of the week, and twice on Sunday. Delicious, dangerous brew.

To the poster above...the Eiche is a wonderful brew, too.

 

Other than Celebrator, Samichlaus is my next favorite.

 

Sun King Afternoon Delight- The BA really gives it a lot more depth.

 

Though it's labelled as a Triple Bock, Mikkeller's Frelser was outstanding.
