I had the beer at a new years day party off a fresh keg. The beer was acceptable, as it was free. Not much in the way of aroma or very interesting hopping. I would rate it about an 80 if I did that sort of thing. Trying to figure out now if in the northeast all the chain restaurants are going to now pour lager, seasonal and rebel or if they are going to remove the seasonal?

Had a Rebel a few days ago, meh. That was a sad attempt if they were going to call it a West Coast IPA, just tastes like a lot of the IPAs from the mid 90s...

Rebel isn't bad, if it's on tap at Applebees I'll grab that with my half price apps but I doubt I'd ever buy a 6er of it. It doesn't have a very aggressive hop bite at all. Drinkable, for sure. Lagunitas IPA wins the taste test.

I had a Rebel tonight and while it really isn't what I would consider a West Coast IPA it was a good beer. Breweries should be banned from using the term West Coast IPA unless they are from California or take it a step further and limit it to San Diego.

Maybe its just me, but the red label with the white paints splash seems pretty similar to the Sucks label just with the colors reversed. The Lagunitas folks probably have reason to be annoyed. But in the end the beer will speak for itself. I'll give rebel a try, if I dont like it I won't keep buying. And I will keep buying my favorite Lagunitas beers.

I saw this at the supermarket the other day they had quite a bit of it the labeling actually reminded me more of BrewDog than what Sucks looks like. They only had 6ers and no mix so I didn't buy any because I wasn't sure I'd want the other five.

Not to come off like a fanboy, but it is quite good, and at the very least you wouldn't hate yourself for buying a sixer. Any bad reviews of this are probably more based on this story and it being Sam Adams than what is actually in the bottle.

the similarities don't end there. Sam Adams clearly copied their use of using a 12oz bottle, and they ALSO filled theirs with beer, extremely similar to Lagunitas. I wont even mention the similar use of bottles caps that is blatantly copying the other. I also noticed words were written from left to right...hello? Similar much? i smell lawsuit.

You know I'm not a fan of Sam Adams but hell I will give it a shot. Its just I have sooooo much beer so to buy a sixer of a beer I'm not sure I will like wtf do I do with the other 5. But my friend what the hell I'm not destitute and on your recommendation when I run across it I will buy it 6er or otherwise.

It's good, it's hoppy and smooth. I'm not promising mind blowing but for a session IPA at a price that is probably under most other IPA six packs, you can't go wrong.

Or find a store that breaks up all its six packs and make your own and throw a bottle in there. That's what I'm doing when I go up to Bristol, CT and go to Crazy Bruce's. Gonna make a six pack with all sorts of stuff (Rebel, Ghandi Bot, Lunch if it's there [what's that you say? Lunch can't go in a six pack? Try me]).

I picked up a 12 pack for Rebel for $14.00. I did not get the "west Coast" vibe/taste from it but for the price it is very good and drinkable. I will buy again in the future.

Anyone else catch Tonys' pulp fiction quote? I will have to do a side by side to decide for myself. Sam Adams Rebel is 45 IBU's? I thought west coast ipa's wre usually much higher?

I would LOVE to see what would happen if people tried Rebel IPA w/out knowing who made it or even told it was a high-prestige small brewery. I would be willing to bet there would be quite a different response.

I tried Rebel IPA over the weekend and was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Better than I was expecting and something I'll definitely be purchasing from time-to-time.

They are. 'West Coast aromas' is a more apt way of putting it, but the flavor is smooth hops and malt similar to a more East Coast offering.

Imagine 60 min smelling like a West Coast but still tasting like 60 minute. I guess that's a decent way of putting it?

Is there a west coast ipa guideline? Not that there are hard and fast rules, but I always think of them as 50-70 ibus of really hoppy beer.

I'm not sure, but a hop-bill of Cascade, Simcoe, Chinook, Centennial and Amarillo to go along with a lighter malt bill seems like a pretty solid start for a WCIPA, even if the bitterness doesn't peel enamel off your teeth. I know Sam Adams isn't a sexy brand on this site, but this is a solid IPA that is better than many IPAs brewed on the actual west coast that I've tried. It may not hit everyone's taste buds, and that's OK, but it shouldn't be knocked because it's made by SA.
