The limited/special edition bottles that have the gold "Westvleteren XII"...where are they coming from? Whats the difference between these bottles and the regular gold cap 12's?

No kidding...Were these still sold at the monastery? Or is this basically from the 4 pack bricks?

They were 6 pack bricks with two glasses. They were sold in Belgium, France and Holland in limited quantities. Not sure if they hit the US yet.

Definitely the bricks, and they'll be flooding the US soon.

"Flood"? I don't think most people will have to fear getting too "wet" from this flood.
    "Trickle" perhaps?

Yes, sometimes referred to as a "Brick" (for obvious reasons).

Source? That's not been the 'word' in previous stories, like this one:

"The Abbey has set a target retail price for the gift packs, each of which will contain six 330ml bottles and two glasses, at $85 per pack."

thanks. lol. the "source" was BAs ...on BA. when it comes to "sources", you're right - i should have asked someone that knew for sure while i was nailing down what the likely distribution source will be in my region.

6+ glasses for $85 sounds much more sensible than 4.

I hate to be pessimistic but I feel this will not be easy to get and I doubt that anyone will find these for $85 cuz when the hype is high, the price will fly.

I dunno - 90,000 bottles is a lot. Even if stores honor the "no breaking up" rule, I expect many BA's to split their packs. Traders in particular. Westy is worth $15 a bottle if you've never tried it, but $15/bottle x 6 will lead to a bit of the ol' buyer's remorse when people realize they can get Rochefort or Bernardus for half the price.

Don't know about that my man, I have had all three of those side by side (with some other quads) and Westy definitely deserves its' perch.

Nothing against Westy. I like it plenty. And with age it is sublime. But fresh I'd take Rochefort, and that isn't exactly a rare viewpoint. Even those that prefer Westy often admit that it's not worth 2-3x the cost of Rochefort.

If any beer could be called tannic when fresh it has to be Westy 12.

So many rumors about the bricks, I've even read they are "not as good" since "the monks found an issue while the bricks were being brewed" lol - I love the Internet. I didn't like PtY all that much and was told "PtY was a totally different recipe this year, it's a completely different beer". The lengths people sometimes go to defend a liquid.

BA is a great resource for (mis)information sometimes.
