Will be flying from California to Madison,WI for a conference Feb 3rd - 6th. Any suggestions on local bottle shops or perhaps what's available as far as distribution to the area(s) goes? Probably going to be looking for things like hopslam or anything central waters that just doesn't see the light of day on the west coast. Doesn't have to be a limited release, just something I can bring home (or ship) for the younger brother and father.

Star liquor, Trixies, Jennifer St Market, Rileys, Woodmans, HyVee. Good bottle shops and groceries all over the place.

Anything in particular you're looking for besides hopslam?

Well the brother mentioned hopslam, black note, BA plead the fifth, central waters anniversaries or barleywines, amongst a few others so I figured just anything that is either a limited brewery release or just solid distribution out in WI. Hopslam was just a perfect example because it's relatively affordable within the distributed areas but cost twice as much if available in California.

My father is into anything barrel aged really. He's big on his bourbons and scotches, but is not a particular fan of hops.

Thanks for the bottle shop list by the way. Any one you favor more than the rest?

Hopslam and CW barlywine are on the shelf (or should be).

I hit all the stores to be honest, Was @ Star & Trixies today. Hit Woodmans and Hyvee to case buys

Those are all brewery-only releases that you will not see at shops anywhere. There is plenty of CW16 to be traded for due to the eight bottle limit, so I'm willing to bet if you were to bring along some limited CA beers you'd easily be able to set up some IP trades.

As far as off the shelf barrel-aged stuff, it shouldn't be a problem finding Peruvian Morning and CW BBBW hanging out around town.

Thanks guys. Any other suggestions for bottles that I can find on shelves over there that are worth hauling back? I probably won't be bringing anything for trades as I won't have much time outside of work other than cabbing it to some stores or shops after each work day.

Also, if he is big into Scotch and Bourbon, ask to go upstairs at Riley's...Might find something excellent he doesn't have yet, they have a fine selection.
Everyone else has good suggestions, happy hunting!

Where are you staying. Maybe we can dial in things a bit for you. While there is cab service in MSN, it's not like a big city where you can just hail one as needed.

You should also have no trouble finding Central Waters Barrel-aged stout.

I would highly recommend a stop at Star Liquor just to get some Black Husky, since they're the only store in Madison that carries it. I don't know what's on shelves from them right now, but I've loved everything I've had except Smoke Monster, which I only enjoyed. Sproose Joose, Sparkle Eyes and Pale Ale are all great. Then when you're in the neighborhood, Jenifer Street Market is also nearby and has a fantastic beer selection. Hopslam should be everywhere, same with Central Waters barrel aged stuff (except the Anniversary).

If you're at all thinking standard six pack offerings, I'd suggest the New Glarus ones over Central Waters. New Glarus fruit beers are everywhere and are something I'd assume a west coast beer enthusiast would geek out over.

OP, I know you mentioned your dad doesn't particularly care for hops but if you or your brother does keep an eye out for Toppling Goliath bottles. It might be a long shot since they don't bottle all the time and Madison sees limited distro, but you might get lucky and see a shipment of bottles one of those days.

Really easy to track it - follow TG on facebook or twitter. They'll announce when they're coming to town. If you can't get on it that day, you're prety much out of luck.

Add Founders and Three Floyds to this solid list.

I'll be staying in Middleton with the conference being held at a venue in Madison. I'm definitely going to be looking into founders and 3F since California doesn't get much distribution. I know a lot of local bottle shops in LA that carry selections from them, but it being readily available on shelves is much easier than buying 12 ouncers by the bottle.

Are backwoods bastard, breakfast stout, and imperial stout by Founders still on shelves? I'm aware that cabbing around may not be as readily available as the big cities, but I believe I do have a cab service available to me when I arrive.

I'm trying not to visit too many bottle shops as I have quite a bit of work to do while in town, probably just one or two shops with the largest selection of great local or relatively hard(er) to find bottles.

Thanks for all the tips guys. Keep 'em comin'.

Ok, so you're likely out on John Q Hammons blvd.. Sadly, not a great area for bottle shops but one thing you're close to is Woodman's West. Warehouse grocery with a good liquor store and the best prices in town. The down side is you're completely on your own there. The staff are there to ring up sales, and that's it. Don't bother calling to see what they have, you jast have to go there and look.

Also kinda near is HyVee West. Nicer grocery store, good liquor selection and the staff can actually answer questions if you call. Prices aren't stellar but there's worse in town.

Beyond that, I don't know if any good stores on that side of town. Maybe one of the Westside BA's can chime in?

Driving in from out of town, I hit Rileys on Saturday on my way to the Badgers hockey game, asked for some Toppling Goliath. At first the response was they didn't think they had any but upon searching they did find me a Toppling Goliath Dorothy in the cooler. Then word came that they had Xhops Blue and Xhops Green. Obviously I wish they had Psuedo, but beggars can't be choosers, I gladly walked out with my purchase hoping to try some this weekend. The folks at Rileys are great people, can't say I made it to Steve's so I can not comment on their location.
