I agree with that. But if you want to have seasonal brews as one of your main lines, then you have to put out a spring in the winter because winter beer sales die off post Christmas.

I polished off a sixer of Escape Route last week or so...it was better than I had anticipated but I thought it was too 'heavy" compared to Gaffel. Not sure if this will be a repeat purchase for me.

@JackHorzempa I just popped open a Long Trail Ramble Kolsch...despite the lemon and pepper, this version looks, tastes, and feels much more of what I know a Kolsch to be. I think it's worth checking out too !

A beer made with Wheat as the base malt and additions of lemon rind and ground peppercorns sounds rather ‘different’. I will give it a try if I ever see it on tap.

    Cheers!

    Ramble

    Brand Name: Ramble

    Style: Kölschbier

    Bitterness Units: 25

    ABV: 5.25%

Date of Introduction: Spring of 2014
    Malts: Wheat and Carapils
    Hops: Nugget and Hallertau
Packages Available: Six packs of 12 ounce bottles, five gallon “logs,” 50L(13.2-gallon) kegs
Availability: Mid January to early March

Description: A great thirst quencher that takes the use of malts and hops off the beaten path. Brewed in traditional Kölschbier style, this beer has a clean, refreshing flavor profile, with strong citrusy and mild peppery notes deriving from the use of lemon rind and ground peppercorns in the brewing process.

I read that and assumed Wheat and Carapils were in addition to their regular base malt since they are calling it a Kolschbier...you know what happens when you assume

You may be correct that they used some regular base malt as well?

    Cheers!

Sam Adams East West Kolsch was a favorite of my pre-21 drinking days. I bet Escape Route Kolsch would be pretty tasty too.

I will miss Alpine Spring! I thought it was excellent. Apparently I am in the minority - they ditched it after what, two years? Sad to see it go. It had the nice mix of low price, easy availability, good taste, soft, flowery aroma and of course, crushability.

I liked East-West Kolsch quite a bit. Do wish the style was a bit better represented in the overall market. An enjoyable (for me) in the L.A. area is Great Beer Company's Hollywood Blonde, as well as Golden Road's Cabrillo Kolsch. Can't think of many others I usually see around -- or at least not off the top of my head.

I don't think we who enjoyed Alpine Spring really are, though, and the beer seemed to be pretty popular, and even more so once they announced that they weren't going to be releasing it this year...I was surprised at how many people both around here and elsewhere were saying that they were really going to miss it! I hope SA brings it back one day.

I'm a fan of the Kolsch style and Escape Route was decent, but there are better offerings...locally I'd pick up a Stoudts Karnival Kolsch before I'd pick this up.

I picked up a 12 pack of Escape Route to give it another chance. If you want a session beer you can just pound one after the other then it works. After having it in the variety pack and in a 12 pack I wouldnt buy it again unless it was really hot out.

I asked on the Sam Adams facebook page what the difference was, if any. They're usually good about replying on there but my question went unanswered both on their timeline and in private message.

It lightly snowed this morning and was windy as hell all day. Nice Kolch weather. :grinning:
