Doing a 1 gallon BIAB test batch of an IPA hop bill. If this works, I'll be doing a few more of these to dial in my hop bill. I am a hop head but I find all my IPAs & DIPAs muddled...

What is the hop bill and how many varieties?

I've played around with 1-5 hops with additions (varying) at 15, 0, whirlpool... My favourite has been all Centennial in an APA. I am doing 1-1.5 oz of Amarillo, Cascade & Centennial @ 15 & 0 this time around.

I have been toying with Simcoe, Citra and have some Nelson Sauv & Galaxy I want to use now...

If I waited for them to both go to bed, it would be 11PM around my parts. No thanks! Mine are only 5 months old, so it's not like I'm chasing them around... yet.

I have found that keeping things simple has unmuddled my IPAs. I go with 2 to 3 varieties used in the flavor/aroma additions. I also try not to use too many varieties that are too similar. The hops that you have and are playing with look like they should make a great hoppy beer! I also found keeping the grain bills simple and having a decent bittering charge helps.

My first home brew this weekend... My wife is not a hophead so I was debating whether to brew a stout or a brown. I finally decided ... screw it, this is my first homebrew... Black IPA it is. Tomorrow is the boil so I'm sure I'll be back to this forum for questions as I pop my cherry on the home brew scene. Wish me luck.

I wasn't going to brew this weekend, but changed my mind once I got caught up on other things. I figure that brewing will be more fun than watching 6+ hours of pregame coverage.

Knocked out 11g of a 1.075 stout yesterday, both carboys are coming up to full krausen. Just fermcapped them to hopefully avoid some mess. Tomorrow will hopefully keg a PtE clone.

Real nice day out today so far! Nice temp, sunny/ partial cloud cover. Watching the early groups come through the 17th hole while I'm out here brewing makes me wanna go play!!

Mashed in already, and about to lauter and sparge, on my house blonde.

Amarillo and Centennial, and gonna use the new WY 1217- West Coast IPA yeast on it to get me a big cake for an IPA in a couple weeks.

Gonna fire up the BGE as well with some ribs, and finish cleaning house. Lets hope the twins are on board with daddy's plans!

Who knows? Maybe some of those golfers are looking at you brewing, wishing that's what they were doing instead!

Yeah, they looked over my way.. Could smell the brew and the smoker, but I think they were just looking in my yard for their ball.

I'm all done, about to finish some scrubbin' and put it all away. Went well, need to adjust my efficiencies as they are coming out well north of 73% now, and the beers are turning out a bit larger.

Also, man.. I forgot how much I love having cold ass tap water that can get me to legit pitching temps in the winter time. Wish it was possible in the summer.

Two brews this weekend in the books.. Kids managed well enough, I'm not so scared now.

Brewed my coffee blonde yesterday (can't keep it on for the life of me) and also got a sour wort Berliner going. Woke up this morning to a raging blonde and the scent of creamed corn wafting through the house.

    Coffee Blonde, eh?

Care to share the recipe for that, for curiosities sake?

Just moved my first batch (Chocolate Milk Stout) over to secondary this weekend so got my first taste with my son in law Saturday night. No off flavors and looked damn clean going through the line into secondary so pretty pumped to see final product. Next up will be a coffee porter that I can start this weekend.

Official results are announced this upcoming Saturday in conjunction with the Brewfest it is attached to. I stuck around for the BoS after the judging was done as I had never seen this aspect of a comp. One of the guys asked me if I was going to get in on it and another said I was not allowed to judge BoS as I had a beer in it. I will know for sure what all 7 beers did come next weekend, I entered my best, we'll see if they think the same...

This one is all about the coffee. I use Ethiopa Harrar from an amazing local roaster and get the beans into the beer as close to the roasting date as possible, often the same day it is roasted. Flavors are vastly different based on the bean used as well as the freshness.

    OG 1.046, FG 1.010
    95% 2 row
    5% Crystal 20
FWH with Nelson to ~28 IBU
    US-05

I could go into my thoughts on the various ways to add coffee along with pros and cons for each method, but I know everyone has their preferred way of adding it. I typically steep 1.25 oz / gallon at the end of primary or in the keg for ~72 hours. This will bring out all the nuances of the bean without much color and none of the bitterness. Another good way is to throw in .40 oz / gallon at FO then steep .75 oz / gallon at end of primary. This will provide a bit more 'traditional' coffee flavor in regard to roast and bitterness.

Any way you do it, the end result is a refreshing iced coffee with a light malt backbone.

Kegs are crushed so fast I can barely keep up.
