I personally think 90 Minute is one of the sweeter DIPAs; most of the reason why I am not a big fan.

Yes, just about everything in this thread is a good rec. Since OP is from Illinois, I would also add Greenbush's Brother Benjamin. Definitely one of the richest, bitterest DIPAs I had in 2013.

Big +1 to The Liberator, that one slipped my mind. Just make a trip up to MI, OP, and all of your beer questions will be answered!

Actually, if your Ruination is 7.7%, it's probably old... It's been 8.2% for a little while now.

I agree with all the DirtWolf notions - nice and fruity with a slight bitter tone at the end, no real sweetness to speak of.

Not like it's easy to get, but I think Heady Topper has a pretty perfect balance overall.

Talk to someone in MD about trading for Flying Dog The Truth. Very bitter and very tropical; I'm currently finding a lot of DIPAs too sweet these days (Double Jack, Hi-Res, etc.), but The Truth really hit the spot in all the right ways.

Shouldn't be too hard to obtain if you ask someone in MD for a trade - there's no hype for it, so it has zero trade value beyond other unhyped locals.

I don't know what you drank. That was one of the sweetest DIPAs I have ever had. It was good though.

:grimacing: Why the ABV Boost? Well .5 percent of a boost shouldn't increase it's sweetness by much.

I love The Truth, it's Herbal, Tropical with the right amount of a malt bill to carry the hops. Nice to see someone else giving its props.

Personally, just try a bunch of DIPAs preferably 9% ABV and below. The higher the ABV, the more malt (typically), so they are typically sweeter. I say try them yourself because I'd say 40% of the recommendations in this thread I find moderately to very sweet for a DIPA.

Funny to see multiple mentions for 90 minute. That one’s on the maltier/sweeter side for me.

I was also going to say what someone else already noted – I feel DIPAs are typically sweeter than IPAs because of the often enhanced malt bill to “balance” the extra hops. I think IPAs in general (at least American ones) are less sweet than DIPAs and may be more of what the OP’s looking for.

But if it must be a DIPA, Ruination definitely comes to mind.

Really? I had a bomber of Ninja v. Unicorn before it. I'll have to give it a second try.

My title is a bit of a misnomer. I used to really like the style -- I'm just looking for suggestions that are a little on the drier side. This is just helping me determine where my money might be better spent (on ones I haven't already tried).

Example: I was curious about Hi-Res because I do like Resin, but this thread is telling me it is pretty sweet.

Avoid bottles out of date or if they're not dated and look like they could be really old. As far as my recommendations, New Glarus IIPA was pretty good.

Knee Deep is scarce in the stores right now. Rumor has it they are/am switching distributors and it's leaving the shelves empty. I agree on the Hoptologist. When it's fresh I'll take it over Pliny any day (or night!).

Drinking DIPAs as fresh as possible is the best way to avoid sweetness, IMO.
