I see the comment as a dated analogy, but still love German bier, when fresh...

Yuengling's founding predates both the introduction of lager beer in the US (circa 1840s) and the common use of adjuncts to brew what then would have been called a "Bohemian" style lager (last half of the 19th century). Originally Yuengling brewed what was then called "common beer" in the US, as well as ale and, later, porter and brown stout in addition to German and other central European styles like Export, Weiner, Munchener, Bock, etc.

Hundreds of US breweries founded by German immigrants and/or with German trained-brewers brewed porter to satisfy certain segments of the US beer market, including nationally-distributed lager brewers like Miller, Schlitz and Anheuser Busch. The latter called their American porter "Black & Tan".

Why do people on this site spell it "bier"?

When I started drinking Beer with any seriousness, it was in the late 80's in Germany. Coming back to America, I was faced with Hamms, Schlitz, Budweiser, Natural Lite, Bush, Coors if you could get it on the East Coast... When you compare those with the German Brews I had in Baveria... Well... The German people used to call our beer water, that kind of sums it up.

Oktoberfest is not a national holiday in Germany, not even Bavaria, only a 70 acre park in Munich. Just saying.

Not to be rude my friend, but have you had German beer? It speaks for itself. I can't get enough.

    The hell you say!

But in all reality, it might as well be a city holiday -- seems like nobody works and they're all at the Wies'n. :grinning:

I figured that, but if the person composes their entire post in English, why not just use the English spelling for beer?

Probably the UK's brewing history is the richest in the world.Practically every present day "innovation" can be found in the record books.Germany also had a rich brewing heritage but abandoned a lot of it with the adoption of the Reinheitsgebot in 1906 after which their brewing became overwhelmingly pale lagers.

I have. But there are plenty of American beers that people can't get enough of as well.

There are lots of very interesting posts here; I'm learning quite a bit. So glad I asked, thanks everyone!

Here, here! I remember some old yarn about a special brew for those poor colonials suffering the indignity of the south Asian climate, cheering their spirits! Honestly, travelling about the UK (and Germany), reveals the real history of BEER.
