Having traveled a lot, I would imagine it could possibly be because the system is so freaking huge compared to many other subway systems. You also may not be able to find official help at a lot of subway stations because there may not be a booth/someone may not be in there. However, New Yorkers are really helpful, so just ask.

Be conscious of which direction you are going, as some stations only go one direction. (Uptown or downtown, towards Queens or Brooklyn, etc.)
Follow the colored lines, make sure the train you are taking stops at where you desire, that's about it.

    The rest is quite intuitive.

To add to that, being from Belgium I imagine there's a good chance you've been to London.

Other than the fact that most stations on the NYC subway still don't let you know the time until the next train, the subway is better than the London underground in pretty much every other respect - faster, more reliable, more intuitive, concept of express vs local etc etc. It also doesn't shut down at 11pm like the underground, but keeps going all night. Be careful though riding it in the wee hours - depending on where I am and where I'm going to, I often take a cab late night (cabs in NYC, compared to London and other major European cities, are way cheaper, so it's not too much of a toll on your wallet).

Look at Google Maps and click on the subway station icon you want to go to and it will list the arrival times of trains. The arrival times are usually correct about 90% of the time. I use it all the time when catching the subway near my apt.

Gotcha - same here. Just pointing out that (for someone from abroad who may not want to use data on their cells etc due to high cost), the only drawback of the subway is that unlike the underground, there are not digital signs in every station letting you know what trains are coming and when. A minor complaint about the subway

This isn“t too far from what I did when I was there. Great beers and hazy memories.

Fantastic lineup. And finishing it off at Barcade is a perfect ending. Be sure to play Tapper!!

the best selection belongs to Forest Hills Station House.

They are actually doing a Bells tap takeover there very soon.

somehow they have access to everything, a lot of Belgian stuff and hard to find domestics.

Blind Tiger and Beer Authority aren't bad, and Rattle and Hum is decent, but none of them compare to Station House imo...

Spuyten Dyvil in Williamsburg is going to have some rarities as well but the clientele there are non showering ironic hipsters and the prices are high.

Barcade is the shit. I love that place.

I would also check out The Gibson in Williamsburg, as they tend to get a lot of rare drafts from Cisco and Clown Shoes.

The two best are Station House and Barcade imo...

Well, I recant my earlier statement. I decided to venture out and go to New Beer Distributors. Did it without getting lost and got some Hi-Res, as well as 2 Bayou Teche beers, Loup Garou and Biere Joi. I also made the trip from 168th to 7th Ave, switched lines at Columbus circle, and didn't get lost. I figured out the color and letter system, and how it works with the street numbers. I also got an app that helps a lot, called Transit. Tried to get Hop Stop, but I couldn't find it for my Android system. Thanks for the tips!

The areas of Williamsburg and Greenpoint (both in Brooklyn) and Long Island City and Astoria (both in Queens) are a short subway ride from Manhattan. Both neighborhoods are among the very best for beer in NYC. The subway system can be a little intimidating, but it is easier than it looks. And the reward is worth the trip. Please do not limit yourself to Manhattan, you will regret it. Best of luck and enjoy!

Went to Rattle n Hum last night. Had Sixpoint Gorilla Warfare and Hi-res. It was face meltingly good. Either going there again or Beer Culture tonight.

You should swing by Top Hops today! It's way downtown off Delancey. Big NYC BA bottle share party and I brought MORE than enough to cover your participation.

If you are still around we are a new craft beer bar (when I say new we are a week old) with sixty taps and over 50 in bottles. Got a lot of great stuff. If you get to stop by I'd love to here what you think. We want to be the go to craft beer place in Manhattan. If taking the subway we are close to every line. Couldn't be easier.
    Thanks
    Mike

If anyone thinks the NYC system is difficult to navigate, I pity the day they step in Berlin's or Munich's subway system, especially if they, like me, don't speak German.

OP, gonna use your thread as a springboard for my questions that are related to your original post.

First, can anyone vouch for Flatiron Beer Hall and/or anything else around that area?

Second, does anyone know if Other Half (I've heard good things) bottle and sell their beer around town? Is their taproom open?

Third, can I find Carton anywhere in NYC (also have heard good things)?

    1. Sorry I can't - never been (and to be honest hadn't heard of it), but:

    a) it looks like it's from the heartland group (take that for what you will, but doesn't scream good times/good beer to me)
    b) they also own Houston Hall which I've heard very mixed things about

Any reason you want to hit that place? I'm sure you can find better. Very sure.

    2. I've only seen it on tap. Did a quick google and something came up about them hand-bottling certain sours etc. But I certainly haven't seen bottles (though to be honest I haven't been looking). Word of advice - stay clear of the Lembeek

    3. I believe draft-only for NYC, but I do see their stuff at a lot of bars. Definitely worth seeking out. beermenus.com is your friend

I don't particularly want to hit Flatiron, just that my friend lives nearby and it seems we'll inevitably end up there unless I can steer our group to somewhere else close by.

I'll take a look at beermenus.com here in a second; I never bother with that site here in Albuquerque because only one bar in the entire city uses it.

    Appreciate the comments, Rollom.

No probs man. Yeah beermenus is definitely good for NYC.

And if your friend is insisting you stay in that area, Rattle n Hum and Gingerman are both close by. Neither are favourites of mine, but they're both solid.

    Have fun!
